Abstract

Apparatus for cutting into sections a continuous web of plastic material, e.g. concrete carried on a continuous end to end stream of pallets comprises a drivable endless chain arranged below the stream, pallet drivers attached to the chain and guided to engage the pallets and transmission means whereby a drive to the said chain will simultaneously drive at least two chains carrying at least two cutter tools mounted between the chains and movable relative thereto, so that the cutter tools move with the same translational velocity as the plastic concrete. As shown, the two chains 12 and 13 carrying the cutters are at different vertical heights and run over sprockets 10, 101 and 11, 111, respectively. The cutter tools are mounted on arms 14 attached to the chains 12, 13 by bearings 17, 18 and arms 15, 16 and the chains move in the same sense, so that the arms 14 remain in the same orientation. The cutter blades 40 are mounted on vertical guide rods 29, 30 and push-rod 31 which is biased upwards by a compression spring 32 and has a cam follower 36 at its upper end. The push-rod 31 is forced downwards as the arm roller 36 passes under the cam 42 and the blades 40 cut the concrete mass. To synchronize the motion of the concrete web and the cutters, the web is cast from hopper 51 and compacted at 52 on to a continuous set of pallets 45 each having a depending member 50. A motor and transmission means 61 drive a chain 64 fitted with pallet drivers 66 which engage the depending members 50 on pallets 45 and move the pallets at a predetermined speed. The cutter chains 12, 13 are also driven from this motor and the pallets 45 and cutters 40 are arranged to move at the same speed.
