Abstract

652,416. Moulding tiles. PEGSON, Ltd., and DAVIDSON, D. J. Jan. 21, 1948, No. 1836. [Class 87 (ii)] Pallets P are carried by a combined conveyer and driving mechanism 1, Fig. 1, beneath a tile moulding unit 2 where material such as concrete, mortar and like cementitious materials, and clay &c., is moulded by a roller 3 into a shaped ribbon R which is supported on the travelling pallets and carried beneath a guillotine 4, Fig. 3, to be cut transversely into individual tiles. The guillotine, Fig. 5, comprises a knife 8 vertically reciprocable to the stream of material, and has associated therewith a punch or punches 9 for forming nail holes. The guillotine has a horizontal crosshead 10 beneath which is yieldingly mounted a parting knife bracket 11 carried by spring- controlled plungers 12 vertically movable within bearings 13. The knife 8 is adjustably attached by screws 14 to the bracket 11 and the back of the latter has a bearing 15 for a punch 9 also adjustably spring controlled. In a modification described in the Provisional Specification the knife is attached to the back of the bracket and the punch to the front. The cross-head 10 is slidably mounted and controlled by springs 25 upon guide members 23 connected to or integral with levers 24 fulcrumed on a bar 27, bolted to the members 29 of the machine frame. A tie-bar 30, and a bar 31 having a knife cleaning attachment, form a rectangular supporting frame for the cross-head 10. The knife cleaning arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown), consists of spring-pressed felt-lined bars 31, 33 between which the knife reciprocates. Extending through and guided by slotted members 55 are the fulcrumed levers 24 oscillated by rods 40 and cranks 41 fixed to a countershaft 42 continuously driven by means of sprocket-wheel 45 and chain 46. The knife and punch are actuated by means of downwardly extending links 47 pivoted at 22, and a lever 48 fulcrumed at 52, the lever 48 having bifurcated limbs 48a and a cam follower 49 arranged in the path of a roller 50 on an angularly adjustable cam disc 51 mounted upon the countershaft. Upon rotation of the countershaft the levers 24 are oscillated to move the cross-head 10 to and fro in a slightly arcuate path above the ribbon of material, and at the same time the knife and punch are vertically reciprocated under the control of springs 25. The cam disc 51 is so adjusted that the operative cutting stroke of the knife takes place when the levers 24 are substantially vertically disposed on the line 1, Fig. 3, at the instant the knife is travelling at the same speed as the ribbon. Provision of any suitable character may be made to vary the knife stroke which is so timed that the knife comes down between the adjoining pallets. The colour box 5 is reciprocated automatically under the control of springs 56 from the cam disc 51 through intermediate connections timed in relation with the guillotine. A roller 6 presses a topping mixture of sand, cement and colour into the top face of the tiles and a rotary cutter 7 trims the tiles flush with the pallet edges.
