A machine for cutting plastic material 3 as it advances from an extrusion machine on a conveyer 4 comprises spaced blades 7 mounted on a linkage in a closed loop and a non-rotary guide 7 for shortening or extending the linkage to change the length of the cut. Pins 12 pass through round holes in the links 10 and slots in the links 11 and also through the ends of pairs of connecting links 17, 18 which are joined at their other ends by pins 19. Rollers on the ends of the pins 12 run between fixed guides 14, 15 along the top and bottom runs of the chain. Rollers on the ends of the pins 19 run beneath a guide 21 above the bottom run of the chain, the guide 21 being movable by screw-threaded rods 27 operated through worm gearing by a hand wheel 23. Decreasing the distance between the guides 21 and 14 will cause a flattening of the chain and, owing to the rigidity of the links 17, 18, the pins 12 will be moved further apart and hence also the blades 7 conversely, moving the guide 21 away will move the blades nearer together. Compensating movement takes place of the the pins 12 in the upper run of the chain. The chain system is duplicated, the chains passing round pairs of wheels 8, 9 at the ends. The wheels 8 are driven by a motor (not shown) and have peripheral rings 32, e.g. of rubber, which engage metal rings on the pins 12 and impart motion to the chains, assisted by the action on the blades 7 of the material being extruded. The inclination of the cutters may be varied by moving the sides 16 on which the guides are mounted ; also the shape of the conveyer 4 may be varied.
