Abstract
937,777. Sawing. MIDLAND INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 22, 1962 [May 23, 1961], No. 18509/61 Class 145. A flying saw machine comprises an endless saw or other cutting band 59 mounted on supporting pulleys 57, 58, at least one of which is adapted to be driven to drive the band, the band being arranged to provide an operative run 65 which is offset from a return run 63 in a direction of feed movement of the operative run so that the return run remains clear of a bar 20 being cut by the operative run. The pulleys 57, 58 are mounted on extensions 55, 56 from a slide 54 which is vertically movable on guides 53 upstanding from a carriage 29 guided for longitudinal movement in side plates 22 by balls 27. The carriage is secured to the upper run 31 of a chain 32 guided over sprockets 35, 36, the lower run of the chain being connected by a block 38 to the rod 42 of a piston- and-cylinder device 43. A member 76 depends from the slide 54 and has a follower 77 engaging a cam track 68 in an arm 68 which, at one end, is mounted on a pivot 70, and, at the other end, is connected to a piston-and-cylinder device 71 so that, when the arm is in its lower position, movement of the carriage causes downward movement of the slide to bring the saw into engagement with the bar 20 to be cut. The bar, which may be of synthetic resinous material issuing from a bar producing machine, is received between the conveyers 16 of a take-off machine 11, the lower conveyer 17 being driven by an electric motor 19. The motor also drives one member of a clutch 37 which is engaged when the forward end of a bar 20 engages a trip device 80 to drive the chain 32 so that the carriage 29 moves forward at the same speed as the bar. The arm 69 is, at this time, in its lower position so that the cam follower 77 draws the slide 54 downwardly firstly to cause spring- pressed clamps 50, 51 slidable in vertical guides 48 on the carriage to hold the bar and then to advance the operative run 65 of the saw through the bar, the operative run of the saw being guided so as to be in the plane of the saw cut by rollers 64 and backing rollers 73. At the completion of the cutting of the bar, the follower 77 actuates a trip device 40 to cause the device 71 to move the arm 69 upwardly about its pivot thereby raising the slide 54 to withdraw the operative run of the saw from the cut and lift the clamps 50, 51 to release the bar. When the bar 69 reaches its upper position, it actuates a trip device 74 to de-energize the clutch 37 and cause the piston-and-cylinder device 43 to return the carriage 29 to its initial position until a trip device 44 is operated to lower the arm 69 in preparation for the next sawing operation. The cut-off piece of the bar is discharged transversely of the movement of the bar to permit the leading end of the uncut bar to actuate the trip device 80 to initiate another cutting operation.
