1490108 Band saws WILLIAM GILLET-GUILLIET-RENNEPONT 12 Nov 1974 [13 Nov 1973] 48804/74 Heading B5L In a machine for cutting timber using a band saw 1 a carriage 5 is movable parallel to a lateral stop 3 for regulating the thickness of the cut timber and parallel to a device 4 for ejecting the cut timber, and at least one element 9a or 9b movable transversely of the carriage may be raised or lowered above or below the upper surface of the carriage, and transverse arms 11 on a shaft 12 may be retracted below the carriage upper surface into a horizontal position or rotated to a vertical position. The carriage 5 is slidably mounted on two guides 6, being coupled by a cable 7 to a motor unit, and carries, as shown, two elements 9a, 9b which comprise endless chain devices. Each chain 20, Fig. 2, passes over a pair of sprockets 21, 22, the sprocket 21 being driven by motor units 10a, 106 and the sprockets 21, 22 of each chain are mounted on a pivoted arm 23 which can be raised and lowered by a jack 24 so that the chain may be raised into an operative position and lowered into an inoperative position. Arms 11 are secured to the shaft 12 which is rotatable by a device 13. A suction cup 14 and transverse arms 15 are provided on the carriage, the arms carrying rollers 15a and being positioned by levers 16 to positions below the upper surface of the carriage or positions above that surface. In operation a plank is delivered from a storage area to the carriage and the raised chains 20 are operated to draw the plank on to the carriage, the plank is held thereon by the suction cup 14 or by clamps and the carriage is moved along the guides 6 to cause the saw to remove the rough edge 25a, Fig. 2 of the plank. The plank is then cut by applying the plank against the abutment 3 by the chains 20 and feeding the carriage past the saw. The waste piece remaining after sawing is removed by arranging the carriage opposite the device 4 and raising the arms 11 to move the waste on to the device 4. A flitch may be applied temporarily against the abutment 3 by the arms 11 and then by a roller, the flitch then being sawn as the carriage moved along its guides 6. The or each chain device may be positioned on the carriage to suit the length of timber to be sawn.
