[Also in Division B3] A machine for working workpieces on several sides comprises one machine frame on which is a first processing line I of adjustable width on which a workpiece conveyed by a first device can be worked on several surfaces by processing devices, a second processing line 2 which is arranged on the frame close to the end of the first line and is of adjustable width, extends perpendicularly to the first line and has a second device for conveying a workpiece in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction of conveyance while it is worked simultaneously on several surfaces by processing devices, and a reception device 6 provided as an extension of the first processing line, lying above the second processing line, and having a device for transferring the workpiece to the second processing line substantially without rotation. The first processing line consists of a pair of rails 7, 8, the rail 8 being fixed and the rail 7 adjustable to vary the spacing therebetween to accommodate workpieces of different sizes, such as door or window frames. Each rail 7, 8 may have a conveying device 22 for guiding the workpiece past straight edges 12 and tools 11 which produce grooves in the edges of the frame. The workpiece is fed from the first processing line on to the receiving device 6 and rests upon a pair of auxiliary supporting rails 16, Fig. 5, beneath a pair of guide rails 15 and when it has travelled to its furthest position operates a limit switch to actuate devices 18 connected by pivoted levers 21 to the supporting rails 16 to move them outwardly so that the workpiece drops on to the second processing line 2. The rail 15 associated with the adjustable rail 7 is movable therewith to accommodate the workpiece. The second processing line 2 has a fixed rail 9 and an adjustable rail 10 and the workpiece is conveyed along the rails by a workpiece carriage 19, the workpiece being pressed against two cheeks 23 while holes are drilled in the workpiece and is then conveyed past rabbetting cutters 26, 27 and a groove-cutting device 28 and at the end of the processing line is raised by lifting devices against an upper cheek during further drilling operations, the carriage returning to pick up the next workpiece. The machine may be used for forming twin tenons on a board while the board abuts the cheeks 23 which are turned through 180 degrees and is moved by the carriage past saws 31, Fig. 12, and slotting wheels 32 on the supporting rails 9, 10, the board being held on the carriage by a clamp 34 which is released by engagement of the carriage with a catch 35. In another embodiment for grinding or sanding the surfaces of lengths of wood for frames, Fig. 16, the workpiece is moved along the rails 7, 8 of the first processing line between upper and lower sanding devices 36 and is transferred by the receiving device 6 to the rails 9, 10 of the second processing line where it is moved by a conveying device, such as a belt, chain or rollers between further sanding devices 36.
