Abstract

In an umbrella of the kind having a flattened cross-section when closed, a laterally elongated cap is attached to the correspondingly shaped crown by resiliently engaging an axially projecting spigot on one of these members in a socket on the other member, and the cap and crown having overlapping complementary end parts to prevent their relative rotation. A tubular umbrella stick 1 has a crown 2 mounted on its end, the crown carrying rotatable lugs 5 for attachment of the spokes. The spokes may alternatively be attached to the crown by the conventional wire ring. The upper surface of the crown has radial grooves 6, each of which receives a cushion 7 of resilient plastics material, and a central projection 14 with an annular groove 13. The cap 9, which is preferably made of a slightly resilient plastics material, has a socket with a closed end 11 and an internal collar which is a snap fit in the groove 13. On the lower surface of the cap there are projecting teeth 10 which, when the cap and crown are snap-fitted together, are forced into the cushions 7 and lock the two parts against relative rotation. The canopy of the umbrella is gripped between the teeth and the. cushions by disengaging the cap, the canopy is easily removed for renewal. The umbrella frame is preferably telescopic.
