Abstract

A nasal tube for feeding purposes comprises a hollow body 2, Fig. 1, of non-oxidisable material shaped to rest in a nostril in such a manner as to leave sufficient passage for respiration and a resilient retaining hook 3 made of a plastics material or non-oxidisable metal or metal embedded in plastics secured to the body and adapted to follow the external wing of the nose and terminating in a pad 4. The hook 3 may be moulded with the body, Fig. 2 (not shown) or spring loaded thereon, Fig. 3, (not shown). An obturator 7 is provided to close the end of the tube, which is spring mounted at 10 on the body 2. Modifications, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), have obturators fixed to the body (7), Fig. 4 (not shown), or axially spring mounted thereon (1), Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively the outer end of the body may be of a resilient material, and have a slit (11) Fig. 8 (not shown) to be opened by pressure applied to the body, or be shaped to facilitate the introduction of canulae Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). The device may be provided with a visible marking to facilitate correct orientation. A further embodiment, Fig. 9, to enable the tube 1 to be positively secured to a tube holder comprises two members 12, 16, either or both made of a elastic material, the member 12 having a bulbous portion 13 and a generally cylindrical portion 14 provided with saw tooth projections 15 which engage with complementary teeth on the inside bore of member 16. The tube 1 slides over the bulbous portion 13 of member 12 and is pinched between complementary surfaces on the inner end of said bulbous portion and in member 16 when the two members are pushed into engagement, thus preventing it from sliding off the holder. The member 12 has a bore extending therethrough and may be provided with an internal helical thread of large pitch at the outer end to lock with a corresponding thread 19 on the end of a tube 18.
