J. F. MONTAGUE INJECTOR Filed NOV. 23, 1960 FIG.2
FIG
INVENTOR JOSEPH F.MONTAGUE WWW ATTORNEYS United States Patent Ofifice 3,127,893 Patented Apr. 7, 1964 3,127,393 INJECTOR Joseph F. Montague, 104 E. 40th St., New York 16, N.Y. Filed Nov. 23, 1950, Ser. No. 71,192 6 Claims. (Cl. 128239) This invention relates to a novel rectal injector which is adapted for use with equipment for administering enemas.
At present, the injectors or nozzles used for giving enemas are made long enough to permit the user to manipulate one end in making the rectal insertion. They are of rigid material and oftentimes injuries have been caused by this use. The length of the nozzle causes discomfort to the user because it may not be shaped properly to conform with the natural curvature of the part of the body into which it is inserted. Furthermore, since the nozzle or injector serves primarily to permit easy passage of enema fluid into the rectum, it would be highly desirable to eliminate the long stem of the injector if the head of the injector could be designed so that it would be inserted readily into the anal opening. The present invention is concerned With an injector which does not contain the long stem heretofore being used for giving enemas.
Therefore, an object of the invention is to provide an injector which does not have the long stem of heretofore known injectors.
Another object of the invention is to provide an injector which can be inserted easily within the anal passage of the human or animal body and will be self-retaining.
These and further objects of the present invention will appear from the following detailed description of the invention to be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which like components in the several views are identified by the same reference numeral.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical section through the injector of the present invention, and
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 but illustrating a finger inserted in the pocket forming part of the injector, the figure further illustrating the flexibility of the injector to facilitate insertion in the anal passage.
The injector of the present invention contains a rounded or bullet shaped head of formable material which can easily be inserted into the anal passage of the human or animal body. The head contains one or more openings which accommodate the outward flow of enema fluid from the hollow interior of the head. The head is formed integrally with a base, which is also circular in cross-section or generally so and the cross-section is reduced gradually to a size which will accommodate connection to a hose. A pouch is provided on the side of the base. When pressed by a finger the pouch acts as a glove .as it is pushed into the concavity of the tip without tearing of the material or damage thereto. By means of the finger the injector is then inserted sufficiently into the anal passage to allow the flange to retain the tip itself in position when the finger is withdrawn. Thereafter the fluid will flow through the tip into the rectum to permit the administration of the enema.
The head of the injector is made of rubber of sufficient thickness and hardness that it can retain its shape while it is positioned within the anal passage. Similarly, the base of the injector is made of rubber. If desired, the injector can be made of plastic or any other like material.
Referring now to the drawings, the injector comprises a head 10 which is made of rubber and is rounded or has a bullet shape. Openings 11 and 12 are provided in the tip portion of the head to accommodate the flow of fluid from the interior thereof to the body of the person. The head is constructed to have a flared out portion 13 which serves to dilate the anal passage and thus prevent the Walls of the anus from pressing against the base 14 of the injector. The flared-out portion or flange is so constructed as to act as a stop and prevent inadvertent or accidental removal of the injector while in use with the result that liquid can flow easily through and from the relatively large finger opening 16 in the base 14. The base 14 of the injector reduces in cross-section gradually to a size which is suitable for connection with a tubing 17.
For this purpose the end of the injector is equipped with a nipple 13 having an enlarged end 19 by which it is detachably held to the injector, and the nipple has its opposite end screw threaded as at 21 for attachment to the internally threaded collar 22 of a nipple 23 attached to the tubing 17. The nipple 18 is provided with a slide valve 24 which is manually operable to open and close the passage 25 in the nipple 18 to control the flow of the enema fluid therethrough.
The injector is preferably circular in cross-section throughout its length; however, if for any reason it is desirable to deviate from this shape, it can be done without departing from the spirit of the invention. In practice, the injector including the head and base may be about 3 inches in length and about inch in diameter at the flared out portion of the head. The openings in the tip portion of the head may be about of an inch.
in diameter. The finger opening 16 may be about inch in diameter. It will be noted that the injector is also formed with a slight bulge 26 opposite the Pouch 15.
This is for the purpose of permitting the head 10 of the injector to pivot as to the position shown in FIGURE 2 in effecting its insertion.
The injector of the present invention is a significant improvement over the injectors being used widely today. The stem of convention injectors may be about 3 to 4 inches in length and be quite rigid in order to make possible rectal insertion. The injector of the present invention may be composed of much softer material and hence eliminates substantially the discomfort to the user. In addition the difficulty of application of the injector is completely eliminated for the injector may be inserted as follows without the assistance of any other person. Also it eliminates the usual contortions which are necessary for the user to undergo when inserting the injectors of the prior art.
In utilizing the injector of the present invention the finger of one hand is pressed against the pouch 15 and inserted in the opening provided in the head of the injector. The finger is then used to insert the head of the injector in the anal opening. When the finger is removed the pouch 15 returns to its original condition out of the finger opening 16, whereby the openings 11 and 12 are exposed and the solution will flow therethrough. There will be, according to the present invention, on movement of the head portion until it is physically removed by its user by a twisting motion which compresses the lip 13 thus reducing its diameter and permitting easy withdrawal.
It is to be understood that although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the invention or limiting the scope of the appended claims.
