Be it known that I, MoLLiE M. SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Douche-` ips, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to a nozzle or tip for syringes and particularly pertains to a nozzle which may be employed generally in making injections of liquid, such as encinas, and which is especially adapted for use in taking or administering vaginal douches.
Devices of the above character of the type now commonly on the market are formed of hard rubber, and syringe kits usually embody a series of nozzles of various sizes both as to length and diameter and also of various shapes, some being substantially straight, while others are curved, the different varieties being provided to accommodate them to the various uses or conditions to which they are put. These hard rubber nozzles are sometimes objectionable inasmuch as they are rigid and inflexible which not only occasions great discomfort in their use but also renders them liable to cause injury.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a syringe nozzle or tip which is so formed and constructed that a single size and type of nozzle will serve the various uses for which numerous styles of nozzles are now provided, and a further object is to provide a douche nozzle which is flexible and yieldable throughout so that it will bend under external pressure and readily follow the general curvatures of the cavity walls with a minimum of danger of injury thereto and with the least possible discomfort, and which while flexible is of such rigidity as not to interfere with its insertion.
Another object is to provide the nozzle with discharge orifices so arranged as to insure a thorough flushing and cleansing action of the overlapping folds of the cavity walls, which renders the nozzle particularly suitable for use in the treatment of vaginal disorders.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure l is a view of the nozzle as seen in side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a view of the nozzle in longitudii'ial section illustrating the manner of nary rubber tubing of commerce being preferably employed, by which the nozzle is given the desired and essential characteristie of pliability whereby it may be caused to follow and substantially conform to the longitudinal curvatures of the cavities of the body into which it is to be inserted.
An important feature of the invention resides in a tip 5 with which the outer end of the tubular body is fitted, this tip serving to slightly stiffen the extreme end of the nozzle and provide a reinforcement by which the nozzle will be retained in shape and rendered durable. This tip comprises a cup-shaped member having tapering side walls 6 tapering from its closed end and having its reducedend of an outside diameter greater than the inside diameter of the tube. The tip is inserted open end fore-v most into the end of the tube, the tube end being expanded to receive the tip, thus forming4 the end portion of the nozzle with a slightly diverging outer wall which is rounded at its intersection with the end wall of the tip so as to form the nozzle with a convex end. The nozzle tip or end portion is thus slightly enlarged and formed with a blunt end, the enlargement serving to slightly spread or separate the walls of the cavity and the blunt end serving as a guard against injury to the parts.
Discharge openings 7 are formed in the end of the tip 5 and preferably comprise a pair of elongated openings separated by a partition 8 of V-shaped cross section, the inclined walls of the partition acting to direct the jets discharged through the openings 7 in an outward direction in relation to each other, thus obviating the objection to a single central jet which is liable to cause injury in the case of vaginal reatments.
A series of perforations 9 are formed in the Wall of the tube adjacent its enlarged outer end through which lateral yjets are Y projected in such manner as to effect a thorough cleansing action on the side Walls of the bodily cavity, which construction is particularly advantageous and important in using the nozzle in vaginal treatments on account of the overlapping or fold structure of the Walls of the vagina.

In its operation the device is employed in taking and administering enemas and douches in the ordinary mode, it being adapted for various uses by reason of its flexibility and the arrangement of the discharge openings in its Walls and tip.
I am aware that rubber tubing has heretofore been employed in colon and rectal ltubes which are only satisfactory for the one use for Which they are intended, and accordingly I do not broadly claim as my invention a nozzle embodying the sole characteristic of flexibility, but my present invention more specifically resides in an improved yieldable tip combined With the flexible tubular body and also coupled with the arrangement of the discharge openings and perforations by Which the device is rendered suitable for various uses.
I claim:
A syringe nozzle comprising a curved flexible and elastic tubular member of uniform diameter throughout having a series of perforations in its Wall and adapted to bend to follow the general curvatures of the Walls of the cavity into Which it is inserted, and a yieldable cupshaped tip inserted in `the outer end of said tubular member and ,memben said tubular member being veX- panded at its end to receive the tip.
