Abstract

1,099,277. Tracheotomy tube device. DOW CORNING CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1965 [Sept. 11, 1964], No. 38009/65. Heading A5R. In a tracheal device comprising a flexible outer tube having predetermined curvature and adapted to be inserted into the trachea of the user through a throat incision, and a flexible inner tube having an external diameter slightly smalller than the internal diameter of the outer tube thereby to allow the inner tube to be freely insertable into the outer tube, both tubes are made of silicone rubber. To provide a positive interconnection therebetween, both the inner and outer tubes preferably include integral flexible interconnection means releasable by application of pressure in one or more predetermined directions. As illustrated in Figure 3, the inner surface of outer tube 11 includes annular groove 16 have a diameter larger than the inside diameter of the tube; as illustrated in Figure 2, the outer surface of inner tube 13 includes annular collar 17 of enlarged diameter adapted to mate with che groove when the inner tube is fully inserted into the outer tube, see Figure 6. At the end of the outer tube is generally oblong-shaped opening 18 which forms an inwardly extending flange adapted to hold the collar in the annular groove. At the end of the inner tube is transversely extending flange 14 which may be manually flexed to contract the collar to permit withdrawal of the inner tube from the outer tube. The end of the outer tube preferably includes transversely extending flange 12 adapted to bear against the skin around the throat incision. Insertion of the outer tube into the throat incision may be facilitated by a solid obturator having a diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the outer tube and also being made of silicone rubber.
