Abstract

Antimicrobial nitrofurans of formula:- in which R is C 1-12 alkyl, C 3-6 alkenyl, cycloalkyl having 3 to 10 carbon atoms in the carbocyolic ring, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxyalkyl, bisalkoxyalkyl or alkenyloxyalkyl, each radical having not more than 12 carbon atoms and any alkenyloxy portion having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, may be mixed with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers to form pharmaceutical compositions, or added to animal feedstuffs as growth-promoting additives, or used to treat an organic material susceptible to bacterial or other microbial attack to protect the material from such attack. The organic material may be a natural or synthetic polymeric material, a proteinaceous or carbohydrate substance, or a natural or synthetic fibre or textile material formed therefrom. The pharmaceutical compositions have antibacterial, anthelmintic, coocidiostatic, trypanocidal and antimalarial activity and may be in the form of ointments, powders, tinctures, solutions, gargles, tablets, lozenges, dragees and capsules. The compositions may also contain other antimicrobial substances such as 8-quinolinol derivatives, sulpha drugs, chloramphenicol or tetracycline or other antibiotics, halogenated salicylanilides, carbanilides, benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones, polychioro-hydroxy-diphenyl methanes, halogen hydroxy diphenyl sulphides or ethers, quaternary compounds or dithiooarbamic derivatives. Specific componnds are named. Carriers which themselves have pharmacological activity, e.g. sulphur or zinc stearate, may be used.
