Abstract
1290913 Compositions comprising nitrofurans CIBA-GEIGY AG 2 March 1970 [1 March 1969] 11064/69 Headings A5B and A5E [Also in Division C2] Antimicrobial nitrofurans of formula I: (in which R is C 1-5 alkyl, C 1-5 hydroxyalkyl or C 1-5 alkoxy-carbonyl) may be mixed with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers to form pharmaceutical compositions, or added to animal feedstuffs as growth-promoting substances, or used to treat an organic material susceptible to bacterial or other microbial attack to protect the material from such attack. The organic material may be a natural or synthetic polymeric material, a proteinaceous or carbohydrate substance, or a natural or synthetic fibre or textile material prepared therefrom. The pharmaceutical compositions have antibacterial, anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, coccidiostatic, trypanocidal and antimalarial activity and may be in the form of ointments, powders, tinctures, solutions, gargles, tablets, dragees and capsules. The compositions may contain -other active ingredients such as 8- quinolinol derivatives, sulpha drugs, chloramphenicol or tetracycline or other antibiotics, halogenated salicylanilides, carbanilides, benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones, polychloro-hydroxy-diphenylmethanes, halogen-hydroxy-diphenyl sulphides or ethers, quaternary ammonium compounds or dithiocarbamic acid derivatives. Carriers which themselves have pharmacological activity, e.g. sulphur and zinc stearate, can be used.
