Pharmaceutical and disinfectant compositions comprise with carriers the new antimicrobial phenoxy-phenol esters of general formula:- where Z is alkanoyl optionally substituted by halogen atoms, alkenoyl, alkybenzoyl, benzoyl, halobenzoyl, alkylcarbamoyl, dialkylcarbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl or alkylsulphonyl which is optionally substituted by hologen, Z' is the acyl radical of carbonic acid or of an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated α, w-dicarboxylic acid having 2-13C, each Hal represents the same or different halogen atoms attached directly to rings A and B, p represents 1-5, and the benzene rings can also contain low optionally-halogenated alkyl groups, cyans, allyl, acetyl or low alkoxy. Pharmaceutical preparations described are topical and oral and warm-blooded animals are treated therewith. As general disinfectants the compounds may be incorporated into treating liquids (solutions and dispersions, incuding sprays and washing and rinsing liquors) or directly into materials to be protected: application to various materials of organic origin including animal and vegetable fibres, plastics, pigments, and toilet goods is mentioned. Other antimicrobial substances may be included, in particular:- halogenated salicylic acid alkylamides and anilides; halogenated diphenyl ureas; halogenated benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones; polychlorohvdroxydiphenylmethanes: halo-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphides; bactericidal 2-imino-imidazolidines or -tetrahydropyrimidines or quaternary compounds; dithiocarbamic acid derivatives e.g. tetramethylthiuram disulphide; sulphur; zinc stearate or oxide. The pharmaceutical compositions may be in forms suitable for external and internal administration e.g. ointments, powders, tablets, gargles, or injections.
