1285932 Antimicrobial compositions containing nitrofuran derivatives CIBA-GEIGY AG 5 June 1970 [5 June 1969 28 April 1970] 28423/69 and 20274/70 Headings A5B and A5E [Also in Division C2] Antimicrobial nitrofurans of formula I: which may also be represented by the tautomeric formula IA: (in which formulae R is C 1-5 alkyl or C 2-5 hydroxyalkyl) may be mixed with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers to form pharmaceutical compositions, or added to animal feedstuffs as growth-promoting substances, or used to treat an organic material susceptible to bacterial or other microbial attack to protect the material from such attack. The organic material may be a natural or synthetic polymeric material, a proteinaceous or carbohydrate substance, or a natural or synthetic fibre or textile material prepared therefrom. The pharmaceutical compositions have antibacterial, anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, coccidiostatic, trypanocidal and antimalarial activity and may be in the form of ointments, powders, tinctures, emulsions, solutions, gargles, tablets, lozenges, dragees and capsules. The compositions may also contain other active ingredients such as sulpha drugs, chloramphenicol or tetracycline or other antibiotics, halogenated salicylanilides, carbanilides, benzoazoles or benzoxazolones, polychloro-hydroxy-diphenylmethanes, halogenhydroxydiphenyl sulphides or ethers, quaternary ammonium compounds or dithiocarbamic acid derivatives. Specific compounds are named. Carriers which themselves have pharmacological activity, e.g. zinc stearate and sulphur, may be used.
