Abstract

An adjustable delay line comprises a coil 1 of insulated wire wound on a former 2 mounted in an insulating support 4 fixed at its ends to metal uprights 11. An electrically conductive resilient strip 3 of non-magnetic material, e.g. phosphor bronze, is soldered at its ends to the uprights 11. The strip 3 is connected to earth and makes contact with the coil 1 along one of its generatrices. Since the insulating material of the wire forms a dielectric the distributed capacity of the coil 1 may be varied by varying the area of contact of the strip 3 with the coil and hence the delay time may be varied. This variation is obtained by varying the transverse curvature of the strip 3 as seen in Fig. 3 and to this end the longitudinal edges of the strip are engaged by an insulating member 5 vertically slidable in the uprights 11. The member 5 is moved by rotating a threaded rod 6 to traverse reversely threaded nuts 7, 8 on inclined surfaces 13 of the member. A leaf spring 15 may be positioned between the strip 3 and member 5.
