Abstract

660,344. Variable resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1949, No. 29205/49. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXV] In a tapped induc. tance or resistance element a single rotatable helically wound coil is of such cross-sectional shape that it can make electrical contact either singly or in prearranged groups with a plurality of contacts spaced around the periphery. A former 1 has a continuous ridge 2 formed along its length and is wound with resistance wire 3. The former 1 is axially mounted between two end plates 4, 5 spaced apart by rods 6. Hollow rods 7 are fixed between the plates 4, 5 and are spaced around the former 1 as shown in Fig. 2. Each rod is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 and is enclosed by a helically wound strip of metal 9 which is fixed to a screw head 7a so as to rotate therewith. A contact member 10 consisting of a thin rod shaped as shown is secured to a cylindrical member 13, Fig; 3, which slides in the hollow rod 7 so that when the screw head 7a is turned the contact member 10 travels along the helical slot 9a. The former 1 is rotatable by means of the spindle 12 so that the ridge 2 may be brought into engagement with any of the contacts 10, each of which may be preset by rotating the corresponding screw 7a. The resistance element may be replaced by a space wound coil so as to form a variable inductance, and if more than one ridge 2 is used on the former 1, two or more contacts may be made to engage the wire simultaneously.
