Abstract

701,894. Inductances. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. Aug. 19, 1952 [April 25, 1952], No. 20799/52. Class 38 (2) A variable inductance comprises a helically wound coil having two sections 10, 11 of conductor with the same winding pitch and diameter and arranged on a common axis, at least a part of one of the two sections being telescopically arranged with at least a part of the other section the two sections being arranged for relative rotation to vary the effective electrical length of the coil. Section 10 of the coil is in the form of a hollow copper tubing haying a split collet 14 at one end to form contact with, and a guide for, the other section 11 of the coil, this section being formed of a solid circular conductor. One end 21 of this latter conductor is bent so as to lie along the common axis of the coil to project into a terminal sleeve 22 through another split collet 23. Rotation of the upper section 11 of the coil is effected by means of a knob 29 and a split insulating shaft 28, such that upon rotation the ends of the section move into, or out of, the collets 14, 23. When the inductance value has been achieved grub screws 18 are tightened down to lock the ends. The-sections.of the conductor may be of any suitable shape and may each be solid and arranged to slide past each other.
