Abstract
806,504. Transforming impedances. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 13, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954], No. 29447/54. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] An impedance matching transformer for matching the impedance of a radio aerial to its feeder comprises a transmission line having an inner conductor 2 and an outer conductor 4. The inner conductor is wound helically along a core 1 of insulating material with the pitch of helix varying continuously from a small pitch at one end to a larger pitch at the other. Insulation 3 is provided between the inner and outer conductors. As shown, the transmission line is connected at its lower end to a coaxial feeder 5, 6, and the smaller pitch of the helix is at the upper end so that the transformer is arranged to match an aerial of higher impedance to the feeder 5, 6. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the insulating core 1 is conical in shape and the inner conductor is wound along it in a helix of constant pitch to produce the same effect. The pitch of the helix winding, the winding diameter, and the nature of the dielectric core may be varied either singly or in combination along the transmission line to produce the required matching. Preferably the variation is continuous but may be by steps.
