Abstract
903,617. Waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 29, 1959], No. 43012/60. Class 40 (8). A waveguide for transmission of H 01 wave energy comprises a conductive helix surrounded by a medium having greater conductivity in the longitudinal than in the circumferential direction. The helix 21 is made from wire having high surface conductivity and the turns are spaced from each other by a distance smaller than the diameter of the wire, e.g. by the thickness of an insulative coating on the wire. In the first embodiment (Fig. 2), the helix is surrounded by a cage of longitudinal conductors 23 insulated from each other and from the helix, e.g. by a coating of insulative material. The cage is surrounded by a jacket 25 of lossless or lossy dielectric material, e.g. a carbon-loaded plastic, glass fibres coated with tin oxide or carbon-coated paper or string. In the modification of Fig. 3, the helix is surrounded by a number of conductors 34 wound into a spiral of wide pitch (α < 27 degrees and usually is about one or two degrees). Each wire is coated with lossy dielectric material. In a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the helix is surrounded by a dielectric jacket of resin-impregnated fibre glass in which longitudinal conductors are randomly disposed.
