Abstract

A seam release strip 20 of a plastics material is secured to a tubular container body 12, which may be of compressible material, by means of a layer 22 of adhesive. After the strip 20 is applied, an end closure 18 is fitted, Fig. 4 (not shown), and its curled rim 34 is bent downwards to form a seam 40. Pressure by the rim 34 causes the end of the body 12 to be indented, as shown, and the strip 20 to be reduced in thickness. The body 12 is inverted for filling and application of a bottom closure 14. In use, a tab 24 on the strip 20 is pulled to release the strip, the thicker upper portion 44 of the strip being caused to elongate so that it passes between the rim 34 and body 12. The closure 18 may be re-used, its countersink wall forming a friction fit with the inner face of the body 12. Materials.-The body 12 may be of fibreboard, formed convolutely, helically or with a lap seam alternatively, it may be of plastics, glass or metal. Liner and label plies (not shown) may be of metal foil or plastics film. The end closures 14, 18 are of metal. The adhesive layer 22 may be a pressure sensitive or thermoplastic adhesive. The strip 20 may be of polyethylene or polypropylene, and may be laminated. Modification.-The pull tab may overlap with the opposite end of the strip 20, Fig. 3 (not shown), its upper edge being cut away to avoid a double thickness in the seam.
