Abstract

937,918. Making spirally wound containers. ANACONDA ALUMINIUM CO. Oct. 5, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 35922/61. Classes 18 and 66. [Also in Group XXVIII] A moisture impervious tubular container comprises closure caps secured to the ends of a body having at least one ply of body stock helically wound with its edges abutting and inner and outer surface plies of aluminium foil and paper laminate, each of which is helically wound and has one edge folded back 49 in paper-to-paper relation, this portion being lapped over and adhesively secured to the adjacent marginal portion in foil-to-foil relation. Making Containers. The inner surface ply 11 which is coated to facilitate slipping on a mandrel and to protect the aluminium and to fill any pinholes therein, is unwound from a roll 12, and a marginal portion 15 is folded and coated with adhesive which is then dried. The ply 11 is helically wound on to the mandrel 13, overlapping margins being sealed by a heated pressure roller 19, and is axially slid along the mandrel 13 by means of a pulley and belt 22. A strip of body stock 23 is wound on the mandrel 13 with its edges in abutment and spaced from the inner surface seam 20, after passing over a glue applicator 25. A second ply 27 is wound over the first ply of body stock 23 in the same manner and finally the outer surface ply 30 is wound and secured to the body stock 27, the aluminium foil surface defining the outer wall of the container. The overlapping margin of the outer ply 30 may be turned under to provide a foil-to-foil seam as before or it may be left as a paper-to-foil seam 33. The pulley 22 advances the laminated cylinder to a flying saw 35 which cuts the cylinder into portions which are then cut to the correct size, filled and fitted with closure caps. Thermoplastic material may be provided on the margin of each cap and the cap heated and crimped on to the end of the container.
