Abstract

1,010,465. Tubular containers. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. May 29, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 20540/62. Heading B8D. [Also in Divisions B3, B5 and F2] A tubular container is formed from a blank 20 of laminated material, the edge of which is sealed with a ribbon of thermoplastic resin 36 to prevent wicking in the finished container, a further ribbon of thermoplastic resin being applied to form an adhesive strip 50 enabling the edge portions of the blank 20 to be seamed together. A dog-type feed mechanism (not, shown) moves the blank 20 along slideways 26 the edge of the blank passing through a slot 30 in an applicator 32 where the resin 36, heated by a device 35, is applied. A wheel 48 subsequently applies the strip 50 which is also heated. Reciprocating wings 74 bend the blank round a mandrel 72 so that the edges of the blank overlap, the seam being pressed against a member 78. The tube so formed receives a crimped-on metal end before being filled with fruit juice; a metal closure is then applied. The blank is formed from a layer 22 of fibre-board or paste-board with inner and outer layers 25, 24 of aluminium foil, adhered by polyvinyl acetate, the inner layer 25 being coated with p.v.c., shellac, or nitrocellulose to protect it from the container contents. The blanks are cut from a roll. The sealing material 36 comprises polyethylene, isobutylene polymeric material and hydrocarbon resin. The seaming material 50 may be the same as, or a variant of the material of the strip 36. The seaming material is capable of adhering the outer foil layer 24 to the inner foil layer 25 direct, the coating on the layer 25 being omitted. Specification 1,010,466 is referred to.
