Abstract
1,181,833. Container closures; portable containers. AMERICAN CAN CO. 2 March, 1967, No. 10016/67. Headings B8D and B8T. The end seam 34 of a tubular container is released by means of a strip 14 the lower part of which is adhered at 20 to the body 10 of the container before an end closure 26 is applied and crimped to hold the upper part of the strip. A line of weakening 24 curves down at 25, Fig. 4, short of a tab 22 loosely adhered to the overlapped strip at 23, so that on pulling the tab 22 the strip tears along the line 24 and at the same time the upper part of the strip is pulled free from the seam 34 thereby freeing the end closure 26. In a modification, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the weakening line 24 is omitted so that the whole of the strip is removed when the tab 22 is pulled. Again, Figs. 9-16 (not shown), the strip 14 may be formed of extensible material so that when the seam (240) is formed the strip material is constricted, yet when the tab (242) is pulled, the thicker portion of the strip above the pinch of the seam elongates and thereby can be drawn out from the seam. The ends of the strip 14 may not overlap. The container may be filled through either end after which the respective end closure is applied. Materials.-The container body may be of fibre convolutely or helically wound; of plastics; of sheet metal, e.g. aluminium or tinplate; or of glass. The end closure may be of metal, and the strip 14 of plastics, metal foil-backed paper, or plastics film-backed paper. The body may have liner and label plies of metal foil or plastics film. A coating of varnish or lacquer may be applied externally.
