Abstract

A photoresponsive member suitable for use in electrophotography comprises a sheet including photoconductive insulating fibres. The fibres which may be in the form of fibrils or fibrids, can be felted or woven into sheets with or without wood, rag or synthetic fibres and subsequently treated with size, fillers, or resins. Heterogeneous or homogeneous fibres may be used. Heterogeneous fibres are formed by mixing a photoconductor with a binder and subsequently producing fibres from the dispersion, suitable photoconductors being ZnS, ZnO, CdS, CdSe, ZnCdS 2 , Cd 2 SeS, ZnSiO 3 , quinacridones and metal-free phthalocyanines whilst the binders exemplified are polyacrylo. nitrile, nylon, and epichlorohydrin bisphenol A epoxy resin with carboxy-methyl cellulose or glass. Homogeneous fibres may comprise photoconductive polymers, copolymers of photoconductive and non-photoconductive materials, or mixtures of photoconductive materials or polymers with non- photoconductive polymers. In specific embodiments mixtures of polyvinyl carbazole with polyvinyl chloride-acetate copolymer or polypropylene and 2,4,7 trinitro-fluorenone 2,5 bis (p-aminophenyl) 1,3,4-oxadiazole or 2,3-dichloro 1,4-naphthaquinone or polycarbonate resin and 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone are used. Numerous examples of photoconductive materials for use in homogeneous fibres are given including charge transfer complexes with Lewis acids. Dyestuffs may be added to both heterogeneous and homogeneous fibres as sensitizers. Thin sheets made of these photoconductive fibres may be laminated with sheets of paper.
