Abstract

1,267,308. Electrophotographic material. RCA CORPORATION. 22 July, 1970 [1 Aug., 1969], No. 35441/70. Heading HlK. An electrophotographic material, comprises a photoconductor sensitized by an azo dye having an o,o<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy or o-amino-o<SP>1</SP>-hydroxy azo structure. The preferred photoconductors are ZnO or TiO 2 whilst the azo dye preferably contains a structure of formula wherein X is OH or NH 2 , and the diazo group connects two carbon systems at least one being aromatic. In one embodiment, the dye is dis solved in methanol and the pH of the solution adjusted to 7 using sodium acetate and sodium hydroxide, ZnO added and the suspension stirred. The suspension is filtered, the-dyed ZnO dried, mixed with a resin in toluene and coated on a support of paper-aluminium foil laminate. In another embodiment, all the components other than ZnO are mixed and the zinc oxide finally added. It is believed that the azo dyes form complexes on the surface of the photoconductors. Metal complexes of the dyes may also be used to sensitize the photoconductors.
