Abstract

1,145,209. Photo-conductive zinc oxide. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORP. 18 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 58080/66. Heading H1K. At least part of the surface of photo-conductive zinc oxide is combined with one or more anhydrides of formula or the corresponding free acid where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are F, Cl, Br, I, or one or two of the substituents are nitro, substituted or unsubstituted amido, cyano or tricyano vinyl and the remainder are H. The anhydrides exemplified are tetrachloro, tetrabromo and tetra-iodo phthalic anhydrides whilst the zinc oxide may be doped with Li, Na or Ag. The modified zinc oxide may be mixed with a binder, e.g. styrenated oil or an acrylic resin, other binders also being specified, and coated on a conductive substrate, e.g. foils of A1, Zn or Cu, paper, coated paper, regenerated cellulose or conductively coated glass or plastics to yield an electrophotographic plate. Sensitizing dyes such as Rose Bengal and Bromophenol Blue may also be used. The Specification also discloses the use of tetraphenylphthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, phthaloyl chloride, phosphoric acid, dimethyldichlorosilane, benzoyl chloride and thioglycollic acid as additives for modifying photo-conductive zinc oxide.
