Abstract

A free-flowing non-caking fertilizer is produced by coating granules first with oil containing a surfactant and then with finely-divided material. The granules may comprise ammonium nitrate, potassium chloride, rock phosphate, magnesia, or urea. They may comprise 10-90% of ammonium nitrate and may have a particle size of 1.5-3.5 mm. The oil may be medium viscosity lubricating or fuel oil. 0.1-0.6% may be employed. The surfactant may be tetra-, hexa- or octa-decylamine or amine acetate and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. 1-4% (based on the oil) may be employed. The finely-divided material may be chalk, limestone, anhydrite, rock phosphate, china clay, basic slag, or precipitated calcium carbonate. 1-4% may be employed. The coating operations may be effected continuously and at a temperature of up to 50 DEG C.
