Abstract
A gas-cooled heat exchanger forming part of apparatus for cooling liquids particularly high viscosity liquids comprises internally finned tubes 1 of rectangular cross-section (Fig. 1, not shown) arranged in layers separated by guide bars 41, welded to the layers, extending alternately from opposite edges of the layers thereby forming serpentine flow channels 4 for the liquid extending back and forth across the tube layers. Bars 41 have threaded studs at their ends on to which vertical spacing bars 6 and side walls 5, 511 are mounted forming channels 16 vertically interconnecting all of the serpentine channels 4 and providing alternative paths for the liquid thereby reducing the effect of any blockages. The distribution chambers 9 of the heat exchanger, leading to the channels 4 are connected in parallel by branch pipes 8, 11 to inlet and outlet pipes 7, 12. Cooling gas e.g. air, carbon dioxide, nitrogen passes through the finned tubes in cross counter flow to the liquid and may be supplied by an axial blower connected by a diffuser to the heat exchanger.
