La presente solicitud, acogiéndose a la 35 U.S.C. 119(e), reivindica la prioridad con respecto a la solicitud provisional de patente de EE. UU. n.º 60/094,321, presentada el 12 de junio de 2007, cuyo contenido se incorpora en el presente documento a modo de referencia.

La presente invención se refiere a artículos absorbentes de líquidos, que incorporan sustancias superabsorbentes y, más particularmente, al uso de ranuras en el núcleo absorbente para proporcionar las propiedades requeridas de
15 rápida absorción de fluido, pequeño espesor, flexibilidad y blandura.
ANTECEDENTES DE LA INVENCIÓN
Por lo general, los artículos absorbentes como, por ejemplo, productos desechables como pañales, pañales para la
20 incontinencia en adultos, compresas y similares suelen estar provistos de un núcleo de material absorbente para recibir y retener los fluidos corporales. Las típicas composiciones de los materiales absorbentes del núcleo son composiciones poliméricas absorbentes en forma de partículas, que a menudo se denominan «hidrogeles» o «materiales superabsorbentes», que son capaces de absorber grandes cantidades de líquido, como por ejemplo, agua o secreciones corporales. En el material compuesto se incorporan componentes fibrosos como la pulpa u otras
25 fibras sintéticas junto con el polímero superabsorbente para aportar unas características aceptables en lo referente a la gestión de fluidos como, por ejemplo la rápida absorción, la captura de líquidos y una reducción en el efecto de bloqueo debido a la gelificación o gel blocking. El gel blocking o bloqueo de gel es un fenómeno que se produce cuando el hinchamiento de las partículas absorbentes debido a la absorción de líquido aumenta la resistencia a la entrada de líquido en el material. Por lo general, se cree que el componente fibroso proporciona unos canales de
30 líquido interpartícula estables que minimizan el efecto de bloqueo de gel.
Por motivos de adaptabilidad, comodidad y estética, resulta muy deseable la fabricación de artículos absorbentes desechables que sean lo más finos posible. Se puede reducir el espesor de los artículos absorbentes desechables reduciendo el espesor del núcleo absorbente. Un pañal más delgado resulta menos aparatoso a la hora de llevarlo 35 puesto, se adapta mejor y proporciona más comodidad al usuario. Para conseguir el menor espesor del núcleo absorbente para un determinado nivel de capacidad de absorción, se aumenta preferentemente el contenido en superabsorbente hacia el 100 %, es decir, el componente fibroso del núcleo absorbente se reduce casi hasta el cero por ciento. Con frecuencia, el material compuesto formado por el contenido de superabsorbente y por el componente fibroso se somete además a una densificación para lograr y mantener el espesor reducido. No obstante, dicho
40 componente superabsorbente presenta por lo general una absorción de líquido mucho más lenta debido a su elevada densidad, un elevado efecto de bloqueo de gel y una baja permeabilidad al paso de líquidos, lo que provoca escapes del líquido. Además, la mayor dureza y rigidez de dichas estructuras da lugar a productos absorbentes con escasa adaptabilidad y confort.

La absorción de líquido más lenta de los núcleos absorbentes que contienen superabsorbentes se puede compensar añadiendo capas de materiales de retención de líquidos sobre el núcleo absorbente que suelen estar constituidas por estructuras fibrosas o en forma de películas capaces de admitir el líquido excretado a su ritmo de emisión y de retener temporalmente el líquido hasta que el núcleo absorbente pueda absorber y retener completamente el líquido. Estos elementos reciben el nombre de capas de irrupción o
50 captación, como se muestra en el documento de patente de EE. UU. n.º 5364382. No obstante, al aumentar el número de capas de irrupción para compensar un núcleo absorbente mucho más lento, aumenta el espesor y el coste del artículo absorbente.
En la técnica, por ejemplo en las patentes de EE. UU. n.º 4.560.372 y 5.868.724, se han descrito otros enfoques,
55 como la colocación del material o material compuesto superabsorbente de forma discontinua y formando un patrón. Se crean huecos en el material compuesto absorbente, por lo que la cobertura de la superficie del material compuesto absorbente es inferior al 100 %. EJEMPLOS: La columna 1 de la tabla 1 proporciona los materiales compuestos absorbentes usados en los ejemplos adjuntos de acuerdo con la presente invención. Estos materiales compuestos presentaron un contenido en material superabsorbente muy elevado, son finos y poseen una alta densidad de material compuesto. La correspondiente
10 densidad aparente, calculada como la inversa de la densidad del material compuesto, es baja, lo cual es indicativo del pequeño espesor del material compuesto. El material superabsorbente usado fue un SAP basado en poliacrilato con una capacidad de retención centrífuga (CRC) de aproximadamente 36 g/g, una capacidad de hinchamiento de aproximadamente 53 g/g y un diámetro medio de partícula de 200 a 300 micrómetros.
