Abstract

Metals are pickled by immersion in an acid solution having a layer of inert liquid floating on its surface, the acid solution containing a surface active agent in a quantity less than that required to disperse or emulsify any of the inert liquid into the acid solution. The inert liquid may be a saturated hydrocarbon oil, petroleum jelly, a paraffin wax, an animal or vegetable oil such as lanolin, tallow or castor oil, bitumen, a low molecular weight synthetic resin, or a low melting natural resin. A surface-active agent, preferably the one used in the acid solution, may also be incorporated in the surface layer. Since the layers reduce fuming of hot acid baths, they are advantageously dyed to give warning that the baths are hot. The examples relate to the pickling of steel and titanium, and disclose acid solutions containing diortho tolyl thiourea as inhibitor. The Provisional Specification discloses acid solutions which do not contain surface active agents.
