Abstract

Un mezcla de material crudo plastificable que se utiliza para preparar un sustrato que tiene cordierita como fase primaria. La mezcla está compuesta por una composición química, porcentajes en peso, 11-17% MgO, 33-41% Al{sub,2}O{sub,3} y 46-53% SiO{sub,2}. La mezcla de material crudo comprende específicamente, lo siguiente: (1) una fuente de Al{sub,2}O{sub,3} y SiO{sub,2} que comprende una mezcla de arcilla que tiene menos de aproximadamente el 22% en peso en base a los materiales crudos totales en la mezcla plastificable, de arcilla calcinada, (2) un precursor de alúmina que comprende alúmina que tiene un diámetro medio de partícula de aproximadamente 1 {mi}m o menos y (3) al menos una fuente de magnesia que tiene un diámetro medio de partícula de entre aproximadamente 3 a 15 micras. Esta invención se refiere también a un procedimiento para producir un cuerpo verde de materiales que forman cordierita, que comprende la preparación de una mezcla de material crudo plastificable de la composición mencionada anteriormente, añadiendo un sistema aglutinante orgánico a la mezcla y mezclando la mezcla para formar una mezcla que se puede extruir y extruyendo la mezcla para formar un sustrato de la configuración deseada. El cuerpo verde se seca y cuece para lograr un sustrato cerámico que tiene cordierita como fase primaria.
