Abstract

Germanium is refined by heating between 1200 DEG C. and 1500 DEG C. in vacuo. In one example, 50 gms. of germanium in a carbon beaker was maintained for 100 minutes at 1300 DEG C. by high frequency heating in a vacuum of 10-5 to 10-4 cms. The germanium was thus heated for some further minutes at 1000 DEG C. in a gas flow of nitrogen with 10 per cent. hydrogen. The germanium is preferably stirred during heating.
