PARA MEDIR EL INDICE DE REFRACCION DE UN FLUIDO SE UTILIZA UNA BARRA (1) QUE SE PROYECTA DENTRO DEL FLUIDO Y TIENE UN INDICE DE REFRACCION LEVEMENTE MAYOR QUE EL DEL FLUIDO. EN EL EXTREMO QUE NO SE SUMERGE EN EL FLUIDO LA BARRA TIENE UNA FUENTE DE LUZ (3) RADIANDO DENTRO DE LA BARRA Y CON UN DETECTOR DE LUZ (5). LA PARTE DE LA BARRA QUE SE SUMERGE EN EL FLUIDO ESTA PARCIALMENTE RODEADA POR UNA CAJA QUE PERMITE LA TOTAL REFRACCION DE LA LUZ MIENTRAS QUE EN LAS PARTES DE LA BARRA NO RODEADAS POR LA CAJA, LA LUZ REFRACTADA PUEDE DERRAMARSE EN EL FLUIDO, DEPENDIENDO DEL INDICE DE REFRACCION DEL FLUIDO. UNA CAJA QUE ES ESTABLE FRENTE A LA ACCION CORROSIVA DE UN FLUIDO AGRESIVO COMO EL ACIDO SULFURICO CONCENTRADO EN UNA BATERIA, CONSISTE EN UNA CAPA (10) DENTRO DE UN TUBO TRANSPARENTE (8) DE UN MEDIO QUE TIENE UN INDICE DE REFRACCION MENOR QUE EL DE LA BARRA MENCIONADA EN UN GAS PARTICULAR O AL VACIO.
