Abstract
A refractometer comprises a prism C having an input face Q for receiving an incident beam of radiation through a body of liquid whose refractive index is to be measured, and means for flowing the liquid over the input face Q before making a measurement in order to remove bubbles. The refraction of the beam is detected at the output face B by, as shown, a photodiode array A connected to digital circuitry (Fig. 2, not shown). The refractive index measurement obtained may be used as an indication of e.g. the specific gravity of battery electrolytes. <IMAGE>
