Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the detector to be safely used for gasoline tanks as well which require explosion-proofing by using an optical fiber whose one end face is made to an optically rough surface as an optical liquid level detector. CONSTITUTION:The end face 1a of an optical fiber 1 which is formed to an optically rough surface is opposed to the water level 8 to be detected and is fixed in a certain fixed height position. When the end face 1a is above the water level 8, the light from a light emitting diode 2 passes through the optical fiber 1 and is scattered by the end face 1a, then some of the light advances backward and is detected with a photo diode 3. When the water level 8 rises and the end face 1a of the optical fiber 1 submerges in the water level 8, the light goes straightforward in the water without scattering, producting no more output in the photo diode 3. Hence, by observing the output of the photo diode 3, whether the water level 8 is above or below the end face 1a of the optical fiber 1 may be judged.
