Abstract

PURPOSE:To optically detect a bubble mixed into a fluid flowing in piping by detecting the reduction of transmitted light due to reflection, refraction, etc., by the mixed bubble by using light transmitted through the fluid in the piping. CONSTITUTION:When light projected from a light emitting diode 11 is transmitted through water 5 to illuminate a flowing bubble 6 at a critical angle or above, total reflection is caused and the light never reaches a phototransistor 12, so that a flowing current has a minimum value V2. Even if the projected light is made incident to the bubble 6 at the critical angle and below, reflection and refraction are caused and the light never reaches the phototransistor 12. When, however, the projected light is projected upon the center part of the bubble 6, it is transmitted through the bubble 6 to reach the phototransistor 12. If a bubble reside in the flowing water, an output voltage drops from a V1 to a V2 and after it rises up to the V1, it drops down to the V2 again and then rises up to V1. This transition is detected to easily the mixing of the bubble due to a decrease in liquid level.
