Abstract
In apparatus for determining the optical characteristics of a liquid in a flowing stream 19 broken up by gas bubbles, by directing light through it and sensing the light after its passage, in which the light is directed parallel to the direction of the stream 19, discrimination is provided for light passed through the device when it is occupied, or partly occupied, by a gas bubble by making the interface 20a across which light enters the flowing stream inclined with respect to the direction of the light at such an angle that light experiences reflection at this interface when a gas bubble is in contact therewith and refraction when a liquid is in contact therewith, so that light is only directed to an optical sensor 23 through the liquid and not through a gas bubble. <IMAGE>
