Abstract

1463910 Liquid level indication STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 21 Aug 1975 34779/75 Heading G1H A method of sensing the interface between two fluids of differance refractive indices comprises passing light through an optical fibre 11 having a refractive index between that of the fluids at least part 13 of the fibre being unclad and positioned so that passage of at least part of the unclad portion through the interface changes the light level detected at the exit end of the fibre. The fibre may be moveable to serve as a form of dipstick or fixed fibre portions may act as sensors of maximum and minimum levels. Both fluids may be liquid. One may be air. The fibre may be vibrated ultrasonically to prevent preferential adhesion of liquid to its unclad region. More than one may be used.
