Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease the change in the excitation mode distribution owing to the fluctuations in temp. and the patterns produced by a light source by controlling the mode distribution by using a fiber of a core diameter or specific refractive index difference slightly smaller than that of a fiber to be tested. CONSTITUTION:One end of a fiber 1 of a core diameter or specific refractive index difference slightly smaller than that of a test fiber is connected to an optical connector 4 for connection to a light source, and the other end is connected at a connection point 3 to one end of a standard parameter fiber 2 necessary for measuring the rate of attenuation of Rayleigh scattering reflection. The other end of the fiber 2 is connected to a fiber to be tested. The core diameter or specific refractive index difference of a small diameter fiber 1 is selected in such a way that the excitation mode distribution to the fiber to be tested assumes a steady mode, and the rate of attenuation of Rayleigh scattering reflection and the loss of connection between the standard parameter fiber 2 and the test fiber are measured. Thereby, the device of simple constitution and high long-term reliability is obtained.
