Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the transmisson loss of an optical fiber while increasing its oil leakage detection precision by providing optically discontinuous parts to a core part or a cladding part lengthwise and irregularly and by removing the coating parts of the discontinuous parts. CONSTITUTION:For example, when an invented optical fiber is laid along a pipe- line for oil transportation, leaking oil sticking to a cut part 4 where no coating 5 is provided is detected. In addition, cores 1 and 6 and cladding part 3 have optically discontinuous parts i.e. reduction parts 2 or large-diameter parts 7 irregularly at prescribed invervals, so light transmitted in the cores enters the cladding parts 3 at the discontinuous parts. Therefore, the sensitivity of oil detection is increased. If the fiber is laid almost linearly, the light in the cladding parts 3 enters the cores again and the transmission loss of the parts except the cut parts 4 is held nearly equal to that of a general optical fiber in coorperation with the coating 5.
