Abstract
Die Erfindung betrifft ein umweltfreundliches Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propylen und dessen Polymer aus dem Ausgangsstoff CO2. Es ist vorgesehen, dass CO2 entsprechend der folgenden Reaktionsgleichung über Methylglyoxal und das entsprechende 1,2-Diol zu Propylen, beziehungsweise dessen Polymer, umgesetzt wird: Formel (I), (II), (III).

Beschreibung
Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propylen und Polypropylen aus CO2
Die Erfindung betrifft ein umweltfreundliches Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propylen (das heißt Propen) und dessen Polymer Polypropylen aus dem Ausgangsstoff Kohlendioxid (CO2).
Zur Verbesserung der Gesamt-CO2-Bilanz industrieller Produkte, beispielsweise von Fahrzeugen, ist der Einsatz nachhaltiger Werkstoffe ein effektiver Stellhebel. Nachhaltige Polymere besitzen in diesem Zuge eine immer stärkere Bedeutung in großvolumigen Industrien, beispielweise der Automobilindustrie. Die drei relevantesten Rohstoffquellen für nachhaltige Polymere umfassen hierbei nachwachsende Rohstoffe (biobasierte Ansätze), Rezyklatkunststoffe sowie CO2 als Polymerrohstoffquelle.
Hinsichtlich biobasierter Polymere aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen sind aus der Literatur bereits einige Polymere bekannt (PLA, PHB, etc.), mit denen es gelingt, den CC>2-Fußabdruck über den gesamten Produktlebenszyklus im Vergleich zur petrochemischen Alternative gering zu halten.
Des Weiteren werden vermehrt Rezyklatkunststoffe eingesetzt, um den CC>2-Fußabdruck durch einen geschlossenen Werkstoffkreislauf gering zu halten.
Diese beiden Polymerklassen sind jedoch nicht für den Einsatz in Anwendungen mit anspruchsvollen Anforderungen geeignet, da sowohl bei den biobasierten Ansätzen als auch bei den Rezyklatkunststoffen, einerseits durch die Varianz bei den natürlichen Rohstoffen und andererseits durch Degradationseffekte im Recyclingprozess, keine Steuerung des Molekulargewichts und damit der physikalischen, mechanischen und chemischen Eigenschaften möglich ist.
Calvinho et al. beschreiben verschiedene Nickel-Phosphide, mit denen CO2 in wässriger Lösung zu C3-C4-Verbindungen, wie 2,3-Furandiol (C4) und das Nebenprodukt Methylglyoxal (C3), umgesetzt werden kann (Calvinho et al., Energy Environ. Sei., 2018, 11 , 2550-2559).
US 2020/0 347 502 A1 beschreibt ebenfalls Nickelphosphide zur elektrochemischen Reduktion von CO2 zu Kohlenwasserstoffen unter Verwendung von Nickelphosphid-Nanopartikeln.
Verschiedene Polymere wiederum können beispielsweise aus deren zugehörigen Alkenen hergestellt werden.
Als Ausgangsstoffe für diese Alkene kommen beispielsweise Diole in Frage, welche mittels Eliminierung zum Alken reagieren. Diesbezüglich beschreiben Lopez et al. die elektrochemische Corey-Winter-Eliminierungsreaktion mit Trimethylphosphit oder Triethylphosphit oder dem bekannten Corey-Winter-Reagenz (Lopez et al., Beilstein H. Org. Chem. 2018, 14, 547-552).
Die Polymerisation erfolgt mittels klassischer industrieller Prozesse. So wird beispielsweise in DE 3 703 038 A1 die Herstellung verzweigter Niederdruckpolyolefine mit Polyethen- Seitenketten beschrieben, wobei aus Ethen mittels eines Nickel- Katalysators Polyethylen (PE) hergestellt wird. Auch ein Copolymerisat mit kurzkettigen a-Olefinen und ein Chrom- Katalysator wird offenbart.
Hinsichtlich des Ansatzes, CO2 als Hauptrohstoff für das Alken Propylen oder das entsprechende Polymer Polypropylen einzusetzen, sind bislang keine industriell anwendbaren Verfahren bekannt.
Der Erfindung liegt nun die Aufgabe zugrunde, die Synthese von Propylen und dessen Polymer ausgehend von CO2 zu ermöglichen. Der Prozess sollte großindustriell anwendbar sein. Die Ausbeute sollte möglichst hoch und das Molekulargewicht schmal verteilt sein (das heißt, die Polydispersität sollte gering sein).
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propylen (III) bzw. Polypropylen aus CO2, mit den Schritten a) elektrokatalytische Reduktion des CO2 zu Methylglyoxal (I), b) Reduktion des Methylglyoxals (I) aus Schritt a) mit einem Reduktionsmittel zum entsprechenden 1 ,2-Diol (II), und c) Eliminierung der Hydroxidgruppen des 1 ,2-Diols (II) aus Schritt b) zum Propylen (III) entsprechend folgender Reaktionsgleichung:
Die Verbindung gemäß Formel (I) ist Methylglyoxal, das 1 ,2-Diol der Formel (II) ist 1 ,2- Propandiol und die Verbindung nach Formel (III) ist Propylen (Propen).
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist auch die jeweilige Verwendung der in Ausführungsformen genannten Reagenzien (wie Katalysatoren, Reduktionsmittel etc.) zur Herstellung von Propylen oder Polypropylen aus CO2, insbesondere im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren.
Schließlich ist auch Gegenstand der Erfindung die Verwendung von CO2 zur Herstellung von Propylen und/oder Polypropylen, insbesondere die Verwendung im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren.
Mit der Erfindung ist es erstmalig möglich, Propylen, beziehungsweise dessen Polymer Polypropylen, aus CO2 herzustellen. Für die elektrokatalytische Reduktion in Schritt a) können bekannte Katalysatoren verwendet werden. Für die Reduktion des gebildeten Methylglyoxals in Schritt b) sollte ein Reduktionsmittel (oder auch mehrere verschiedene) verwendet werden, das sinnvollerweise in der Lage ist, beide C=O Gruppen am Methylglyoxal zu den Hydroxygruppen zu reduzieren. Die Hydroxidgruppen des gebildeten 1 ,2-Diols werden in Schritt c) eliminiert. Dafür stehen verschiedene Methoden zur Auswahl.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist schließlich auch die Verwendung des so hergestellten Polypropylens in Stoßfängern, Luftfiltergehäusen, Führungskanälen, Seitenblenden, Kunststoffmontageträgern, Aggregaten in der MEB, in Crashabsorber-Elementen und Ladungsträgern sowie in der Elektrotechnik (als Trafogehäuse, Draht- und Kabelummantelung, Isolierfolien, BOPP, Dielektrikum von Kunststoff-Folienkondensatoren und Leistungskondensatoren), im Bauwesen (als Armaturen, Rohrleitungen, Lüftungs- und Klimatechnik in korrosiver Umgebung und bei Förderung korrosiver Gase) und in der Textilindustrie (als Verpackungsmaterialien, Hygieneprodukte, medizinische Produkte, Heimtextilien, technische Textilien) sowie weiteren, nicht explizit erwähnten Polypropylenprodukten.
Vorteil der Erfindung ist, dass das Verfahren eine nachhaltige Herstellung eines Propylens ermöglicht. Hinsichtlich des CC>2-Fußabdruckes ist es vorteilhaft, mit der Erfindung CO2 zu nutzbringenden chemischen Grundstoffen wie Propylen umzusetzen.
Darüber hinaus haben in Folge die aus diesem Propylen hergestellten, veredelten Stoffe, wie Polymere oder andere Grundchemikalien eine wesentlich bessere C02-Bilanz. Der CO2- Fußabdruck der Polymere über den Produktlebenszyklus ist negativ, das heißt in der Gesamtbilanz wird mehr atmosphärisches CO2 gebunden als freigesetzt.
Weiterer Vorteil ist, dass mit der Erfindung gewonnenes Polymer Polypropylen wesentlich bessere Eigenschaften besitzt, als beispielsweise solches aus Rezyklatkunststoffen.
Das erfindungsgemäß hergestellte Polypropylen erlaubt somit anspruchsvolle Anwendungen. Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ermöglicht nämlich die Steuerung eines definierten Molekulargewichts und einer engen Molgewichtsverteilung und damit der physikalischen, mechanischen und chemischen Eigenschaften.
Schritt a):
In bevorzugter Ausgestaltung der Erfindung ist vorgesehen, dass in Schritt a) ein Nickelphosphid-Katalysator eingesetzt wird. Besonders bevorzugt ist es Ni2P. Dies ist vorteilhaft, um in der elektrokatalytischen Reduktion von CO2 gemäß der Erfindung als Hauptprodukt das Methylglyoxal zu erhalten.
Schritt b):
In einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung wird für die Reduktion in Schritt b) als Reduktionsmittel Natriumborhydrid (NaBH4) verwendet. Vorteil dabei ist, dass das Natriumborhydrid ein starkes Reduktionsmittel ist und in der Lage ist, beide Carbonyl-Gruppen (C=O) des Methylglyoxals zu Hydroxylgruppen (OH) zu reduzieren. Vorteilhaft ist, dass das Verfahren dadurch einfacher und kostengünstiger ist, da kein Wechsel des Reduktionsmittels nötig ist. Daher kann auch auf eine Zwischenreinigung des Mono-Hydroxy-Zwischenprodukts verzichtet werden. Es wird folglich in nennenswerter Menge Lösemittel gespart. Auch dadurch wird die CO2-Bilanz zusätzlich verbessert.
Bevorzugt ist das Lösemittel bei Schritt b) Ethanol.
In einer ebenfalls bevorzugten Ausführung wird die Reduktion in Schritt b) in zwei Stufen durchgeführt, wovon die erste Stufe in einer ethanolischen Lösung und die zweite Stufe in einer
sauren Lösung stattfindet. Beide Ausführungsformen haben sich als vorteilhaft erwiesen, insbesondere auch für den Fall, dass Natriumborhydrid als Reduktionsmittel eingesetzt wird.
In einer bevorzugten Ausführung wird in Schritt b) die Temperatur beginnend bei -50°C bis +50°C, insbesondere bei -5°C bis +5°C, vorzugsweise bei etwa 0°C, bis auf Raumtemperatur erhöht.
Schritt c):
In einer weiteren, bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung wird zur Eliminierung in Schritt c) eine Thiocarbonylverbindung nach Formel Ha und/oder eine Phosphorverbindung, ausgewählt aus Trimethylphosphit, Triethylphosphit und dem Corey-Hopkins-Reagenz nach Formel Hb, eingesetzt:
(Ha) (Hb) wobei R1 ausgewählt ist aus CI und Imidazol-Resten. Bei R1=CI ist die Verbindung (Ha) Phosgen. Bei R1=lmidazol handelt es sich um das Corey-Winter-Reagenz.
Besonders bevorzugt wird beides (also die Thiocarbonylverbindung und die Phosphorverbindung) eingesetzt. Vorteilhaft eignet sich dies besonders für die Corey-Winter- Eliminierung als Eliminierung in Schritt c) des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens.
In einer weiteren, bevorzugten Ausgestaltung der Erfindung findet die Eliminierung in Schritt c) bei 95 bis 125°C statt, insbesondere bei 100 bis 120°C , besonders bevorzugt bei 105 bis 115°C. Vorteilhaft ist in diesen Ausführungen die Ausbeute von CO2 zum Propylen besonders hoch.
In einer bevorzugten Variante dieser Ausführung wird zur Eliminierung in Schritt c) als Phosphorverbindung Trimethylphosphit eingesetzt. Dies ist besonders ausbeutesteigernd.
Besonders bevorzugt ist dabei die Thiocarbonylverbindung Phosgen, das heißt die Thiocarbonylverbindung nach Formel Ha mit R1=CI.
In einer besonders bevorzugten Ausgestaltung werden die beiden letztgenannten Ausführungsformen kombiniert, das heißt die Temperatur in Schritt c) mit der Phosphorverbindung Trimethylphosphit. Diese Kombination erlaubt vorteilhaft eine bessere Umsetzung und damit einen verringerten CC>2-Fußabdruck.
In einer bevorzugten Ausgestaltung wird zur Eliminierung in Schritt c) als Phosphorverbindung das Corey-Hopkins-Reagenz nach Formel Hb eingesetzt:
Vorteil dabei ist, dass der CC -Fußabdruck des Verfahrens weiter reduziert wird.
Besonders bevorzugt beträgt dabei die Temperatur 20 bis 80°C, insbesondere 35 bis 45°C, bevorzugt 38 bis 42°C, besonders bevorzugt etwa 40°C.
Besonders bevorzugt ist die Thiocarbonylverbindung Phosgen, das heißt die Thiocarbonylverbindung nach Formel Ha mit R1=Chlor.
In einer anderen bevorzugten Ausführungsform ist in Schritt c) vorgesehen, dass die Eliminierung mittels potentiostatischer Elektrolyse bei < -1,0 V, bevorzugt -1 ,9 bis -1 ,0 V, insbesondere bei -1 ,7 bis -1 ,2 V, bevorzugt bei -1,5 bis -1,4 V, besonders bevorzugt bei etwa -1 ,45 V, gegen Ag/AgCI durchgeführt wird. Auch dies führt vorteilhaft zu einer besseren Umsetzung und damit zu einem geringeren CC>2-Fußabdruck, aufgrund des gering angelegten Potentials.
Ein bevorzugte Ausgestaltung verwendet in Schritt c) eine Leistung von 2,2 F/mol Produkt (±0,3 F/mol, insbesondere ±0,15 Faraday/mol).
Eine andere bevorzugte Ausgestaltung verwendet in Schritt c) eine RVC-Kathode (RVC = retikulierter Glaskohlenstoff).
Auch diese Ausgestaltungen können mit Vorteilen miteinander kombiniert werden.
In einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung wird das bei der Eliminierung in Schritt c) abgespaltene CO2 zu Schritt a) zurückgeführt und dort wieder als Ausgangsstoff für die elektrokatalytische Reduktion von CO2 genutzt.
In einer weiteren bevorzugten Ausgestaltung der Erfindung ist vorgesehen, dass mit der Erfindung aus dem CO2 sowohl Propylen, als auch Polypropylen hergestellt wird. Dabei wird als Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polypropylen aus CO2 nach Schritt c) das mit der Erfindung erhaltene Propylen zu Polypropylen polymerisiert. Hierzu eignen sich bekannte Methoden wie beispielsweise Suspensions-, Masse- oder Gasphasenpolymerisationsmethoden. Vorteil dieser Ausgestaltung ist, dass das Propylen veredelt wurde und das erhaltene Polypropylen auch für anspruchsvolle Anwendungen genutzt werden kann, denn die Molgewichtsverteilung ist schmal. Das Molekulargewicht kann demnach sehr präzise eingestellt werden; präziser, als es bei anderen Polypropylen-Synthesen möglich ist.
Weitere bevorzugte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung ergeben sich aus den übrigen, in den Unteransprüchen genannten Merkmalen.
Die verschiedenen in dieser Anmeldung genannten Ausführungsformen der Erfindung sind, sofern im Einzelfall nicht anders ausgeführt, mit Vorteil miteinander kombinierbar.
Die Erfindung wird durch die nachfolgend aufgeführten Ausführungsbeispiele erläutert.
Ausführungsbeispiele
Ausführungsbeispiel 1 :
Die Synthese von Polypropylen in Ausführungsbeispiel 1 aus atmosphärischem CO2 umfasst vier Synthesestufen:
1.) Elektrochemische Reduktion am Ni2P Katalysator: Die elektrochemische Reduktion des CO2 wird initiiert durch die Anlagerung des Kohlenstoffdioxids über die Sauerstoffatome unter einer gleichzeitigen Hydridanbindung an die katalytisch aktive Ni2P-Oberfläche. Durch eine Protonierung dieser Spezies wird das Formaldehyd als Zwischenprodukt generiert. Dieses reagiert im Anschluss mit zwei weiteren Formaldehydspezies über C-C-Kupplungsreaktionen an der katalytisch aktiven Elektrodenoberfläche über ein Glycoaldehyd zum Glycerinaldehyd (2,3- Dihydroxypropanal). Durch eine Abspaltung der Hydroxidgruppe wird das Reaktionsprodukt der ersten Stufe (Methylglyoxal, 2-Oxopropanal) erhalten.
2.) Hydridaustausch an Natriumborhydrid in EtOH: Der Hydridaustausch erfolgt am Methylglyoxal mithilfe von Natriumborhydrid, bei dem vier Methylglyoxalmoleküle über die Sauerstoffatome der Ketogruppe an das Boratom unter einer Hydrierung des Carbonylkohlenstoffs anlagern. Im sauren Medium erfolgt im Anschluss die Abspaltung der Borsäure unter der Bildung des Hydroxyacetons (1-Hydroxypropan-2-on). Eine erneute Reaktion des Natriumborhydrids führt zur Ausbildung des Propylenglykols als Reaktionsprodukt der zweiten Stufe.
3.) Corey-Winter-Eliminierung: Die Corey-Winter-Eliminierung führt zur Ausbildung des Propylens und wird durch einen nucleophilen Angriff der Diolsauerstoffe am Thiocarbonylkohlenstoff initiiert und bildet unter Abspaltung von Chlorwasserstoff das cyclische Thiocarbonat. Anschließend erfolgt ein nucleophiler Angriff des Corey-Hopkins-Reagenz an das Schwefelatom und bildet ein Carbanion aus. Der Thiophosphorsäureester wird unter der Ausbildung eines cyclischen Carbens abgespalten, welches unter CC>2-Abspaltung (zyklische Verwendung als Edukt in Stufe 1) das Propen als Reaktionsprodukt der dritten Stufe ausbildet.
4.) Polymerisation: Die Polymerisation des Propens verläuft anhand der bekannten, industriellen Syntheseverfahren (Suspensions-, Masse- oder Gasphasenpolymerisationsverfahren).
Ausführungsbeispiel 2:
Auch in Ausführungsbeispiel 2 umfasst der Syntheseweg vier Stufen:
1. Elektrochemische Reduktion am Ni2P Katalysator.
(exp. 11 ,17 kWh/kg Methylglyoxal)
2. Hydridaustausch am Natriumborhydrid in EtOH
min, (DOI: 10.15227/orgsyn.091.0185)
3. Corey-Winter-Eliminierung (DOI: 10.3762/bjoc.14.41):
entweder via T rimethoxyphosphit bei 111 °C
oder via Corey-Hopkins Reagenz [1 ,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1 ,3,2- diazaphospholidine] bei 40°C
oder via Potentiostatischer Elektrolyse bei -1.45 V vs. Ag/AgCI, 2.2 F/mol, RVC Kathode , 1 ,5 h
4. Polymerisation (Suspension/Masse/Gasphase)

Claims
Patentansprüche Verfahren zur Herstellung von Propylen (III) aus CO2, mit den Schritten a) elektrokatalytische Reduktion des CO2 zu Methylglyoxal (I), b) Reduktion des Methylglyoxals (I) mit einem Reduktionsmittel zum entsprechenden 1 ,2-Diol (II), und c) Eliminierung der Hydroxidgruppen des 1 ,2-Diols (II) zum Propylen (III) entsprechend folgender Reaktionsgleichung:
Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 , wobei für die Reduktion in Schritt b) als Reduktionsmittel Natriumborhydrid verwendet wird. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 oder 2, wobei in Schritt a) ein Nickelphosphid- Katalysator eingesetzt wird. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, wobei zur Eliminierung in Schritt c) eine Thiocarbonylverbindung nach Formel Ha und/oder eine Phosphorverbindung, ausgewählt aus Trimethylphosphit, Triethylphosphit und dem Corey-Hopkins-Reagenz nach Formel Hb eingesetzt werden,
(Ha) (llb) mit R1 ausgewählt aus CI und Imidazol-Resten.
Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, wobei die Eliminierung in Schritt c) bei 95 bis 125°C, insbesondere bei 100 bis 120°C , besonders bevorzugt bei 105 bis 115°C, durchgeführt wird. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, wobei zur Eliminierung in Schritt c) als Phosphorverbindung das Corey-Hopkins-Reagenz nach Formel Hb eingesetzt wird:
Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, wobei die Eliminierung in Schritt c) mittels potentiostatischer Elektrolyse bei < -1 ,0 V, insbesondere -1,9 bis -1,0 V, insbesondere bei -1 ,7 bis -1 ,2 V, bevorzugt bei -1 ,5 bis -1,4 V, besonders bevorzugt bei etwa -1,45 V, gegenüber Ag/AgCI durchgeführt wird. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polypropylen aus CO2 nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, wobei nach Schritt c) das Propylen zu Polypropylen polymerisiert wird. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7 oder 8, wobei das in Schritt c) abgespaltene CO2 zu Schritt a) zurückgeführt wird. Verwendung von CO2 zur Herstellung von Propylen und/oder Polypropylen mit einem Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9.
