Definitions
- the present invention relates to a tray comprising a cardboard base arranged to be engaged in a lid.
- plateau in the context of this invention means a tray, a container, a receptacle, a dish, intended to hold a typically agri-food product, these terms being used interchangeably herein.
- the present invention also relates to a tray and lid assembly, the tray side and the manufacturing process.
- cardboard in the sense of the present invention, we mean a material made of a cellulosic or lignocellulosic base, such as cardboard for example, but also Stora Enso CKB 250 gram cardboard.
- the existing trays or containers offered numerous advantages, and given that this was a well-established product, they were remarkably well-designed to satisfy both the consumer and the caterer or manufacturer who filled them.
- These plastic trays for example, are easily stackable, whether empty or full, and when covered with their lids, they are sturdy enough to prevent crushing the food.
- the lid is typically clipped on securely to adequately protect the contents of the tray while also allowing for easy opening by the consumer.
- the document EP4071067 discloses packaging, particularly for food products, which includes a cardboard tray and a lid placed on the tray when the packaging is closed, with studs in the lid engaging in openings formed in wall sections of at least two opposite side walls of the tray.
- the document FR2656591 relates to a modular and stackable box for various uses, comprising a polygonal base and side walls extending upwards from said base, made by folding the panels of a suitable blank cut from a base sheet of flat material, preferably cardboard, characterized in that the side walls of the box are inclined towards the inside of said box and are each formed by two juxtaposed panels of said blank, on the one hand an inner panel forming an acute angle with the base and an outer panel attached to said inner panel and connected to it by a folding edge forming the upper edge of said inclined wall.
- WO2014009684 discloses a food product container, comprising a container body/tray and a lid.
- the container body/tray and the lid are held together by protrusions on the lid which engage in openings and flaps provided on the container body/tray.
- the document US5699959 discloses a container and a snap-on lid wherein the container has a peripheral side wall comprising an upper peripheral edge having at least two opposing snap-on zones. Openings are formed in the snap-on zones of the side wall. Folded flaps are connected to the upper part of the peripheral edge. The flaps have an upper wall portion covering the openings and a lower wall portion attached to the side wall. The upper wall portion is spaced from the side wall to form a hollow space behind the openings.
- the lid comprises an upper element and a peripheral rim with projections formed to fit into the openings in the side wall of the container and lock the lid onto the container.
- the present invention aims to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art by providing a lid that offers the same simplicity
- the present invention provides a tray with a cardboard base that is easily stackable when empty and stackable when full. It is equipped with a lid that is easy to close, remains closed during restocking on shelves, and is sufficiently resistant yet easy for the consumer to open.
- the tray according to the present invention has a first and a second substantially flat projection formed during the folding of the side walls by means of a deviation of the grooved, half-cut, or perforated fold line. Beneath these projections are, respectively, a first and a second opening formed in the second thickness of each of the first and second walls. These two projections, on two different walls, together with the two openings, each allow an embossed section provided in a lid to engage and be held firmly.
- the tray thus formed is by Elsewhere, the trays are stackable when empty, with protrusions preventing them from sinking into each other when stacked and facilitating separation for filling. Furthermore, the tray has no internal or external obstacles that would impede separation when stacked.
- the double thickness of the side walls reinforces the tray, allowing for stacking when full and also facilitating opening, as the side walls do not collapse under the pressure of the consumer reaching for their meal.
- This double thickness where an opening is made in one layer beneath the protrusions, strengthens the lid's grip and keeps the food isolated from the tray's external environment, since the other layer protects the product from external contamination.
- the deviation of the fold line may comprise a succession of straight segments or a curve.
- the opening may be oblong, oval, rectangular, hexagonal, crescent-shaped, or have one or more rounded edges and/or one or more straight edges.
- basal wall provided with at least three walls extending predominantly upwards from the basal wall means that said at least three walls extend transversely upwards from the basal wall, either perpendicularly or slightly flared to facilitate the stacking of several empty trays inside one another.
- these at least three walls extend transversely upwards from the basal wall in a slightly flared manner.
- the angle formed between the first projection and The first wall, or the angle formed between the second projection and the second wall can even reach 90° without hindering the lid's locking mechanism.
- the upper walls of the first and second projections which are essentially flat and formed during the folding of the side walls, are oriented downwards. This allows the lid's embossed sections to be guided until they reach a closed position where the lid's embossed sections are engaged under the projections that hold it in place, within the openings.
- the downward orientation of the upper walls of the first and second projections allows the embossed sections to slide along the wall when the user applies pressure to the lid to engage it with the tray.
- said basal wall having at least three walls is a basal wall having 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 walls.
- the platform according to the present invention can be triangular, rectangular or square in shape, in the form of a hexagon, octagon, decagon, dodecagon,...
- the platform is rectangular or square in shape, said basal wall being thus provided with 4 walls and said first wall and said second wall face each other as well as the third and fourth.
- the second layer of the first wall has a third longitudinal through-hole delimited by the cardboard of the second layer of the first wall, forming at least a top edge and a bottom edge between which the third hole is located.
- the top edge is positioned at a distance H3 measured from a horizontal plane passing through a straight portion of a top edge of the first wall and along the height of the first wall.
- the tray according to the present invention has two projections and two openings on one of the side walls in order to reinforce the retention of the lid, which is particularly advantageous for relatively elongated trays.
- said second layer of said second wall has a fourth longitudinal through-hole delimited by the cardboard of the second layer of the second wall forming at least a top edge and a bottom edge between which is the fourth hole, said top edge being positioned at a distance H4 measured from a horizontal plane passing through a straight part of a top edge of said first wall and along the height of said first wall, said second layer of said second wall having a fourth substantially flat projection, positioned above said fourth longitudinal through-hole, having a height h4, measured between said top edge and a fold line forming predominantly said top edge of said second wall, measured along the height of said fourth projection, said height h4 being greater than said height H4, said fourth projection forming an angle with said second wall less than or equal to 90° and greater than 30°.
