L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'une composition de lactame pour améliorer l'hygiène des toilettes, l'utilisation comprenant le traitement d'une surface de toilettes, la composition comprenant de 0,0001 à 5 % en poids d'un lactame; l'utilisation impliquant la réduction des mauvaises odeurs; ou l'utilisation impliquant la réduction de la formation de tartre d'urine indésirable dans les toilettes; le lactame étant de formule (I) ou (II) dans laquelle R1 et R2 sont chacun indépendamment sélectionnés parmi un hydrogène, un halogène, un alkyle, un cycloalkyle, un alcoxy, un oxoalkyle, un alcényle, un hétérocyclyle, un hétéroaryle, un aryle et un aralalkyle; et R3 est sélectionné parmi un hydrogène, un hydroxyle, un alkyle, un cycloalkyle, un alcoxy, un oxoalkyle, un alcényle, un hétérocyclyle, un hétéroaryle, un cycloalkyle, un aryle, un aralalkyle, -C(O)CR6=CH2, et (CH2)nN+(Ra)3, n étant un nombre entier de 1 à 16, de préférence de 2 à 8, et chaque Ra étant indépendamment H ou un groupe alkyle en C1-4; R4 et R5 sont indépendamment sélectionnés parmi un hydrogène, un aryle, un hétérocyclyle, un hétéroaryle et un arylalkyle; et R6 est sélectionné parmi un hydrogène et un méthyle; et R7 est sélectionné parmi un hydrogène et -C(O)CR6=CH2; et de préférence, au moins l'un de R4 et R5 est un hydrogène.
