- Isonicotinic acid (1) (5.00 g; 40.614 mmol; 1.0 eq) was dissolved in thionyl chloride (15 mL; 206.77 mmol; 5.1 eq) and heated to reflux overnight. After returning to ambient temperature, the excess thionyl chloride was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure, then the residue obtained was dissolved in anhydrous dichloromethane (55 mL).
