Definitions
- This invention is related to the field of the manufacturing of automotive lighting devices, and more specifically to the positioning of cables or wires on a lighting device housing.
- Vehicles lighting devices requires an increasing number of electric connections to perform new functions, providing a safer and advanced performance.
- a harness of wires is used to make information and electric supply reach each one of the light sources of the lighting device.
- This harness is distributed in different bundles throughout the housing, because lighting modules must be located in specific positions to fulfil strict lighting regulations.
- Each one of these wires bundles end with an electrical connector, which is plugged into the lighting module.
- these wires bundles are loose and, since the assembly of the lighting devices is made with reduced visibility and accessibility, the final layout of these bundles after connecting the lighting module is uncertain. This may be dangerous and impact the correct operation of the lighting device.
- the invention provides a solution for this problem by means of a method for manufacturing a lighting device according to claim 1 and a lighting device according to claim 9.
- Preferred embodiments of the invention are defined in dependent claims.
- the invention provides a method for manufacturing a lighting device, the method comprising the steps of
- a connecting stretch is more than a connection point, is a continuous portion of the conductive track which is directly fixed to the housing in its entirety, the whole connecting stretch being in contact with the housing.
- a mere clamp which attaches a track bundle in a single point to the housing should not be understood as a connecting stretch.
- Such a manufacturing method produces lighting devices wherein the position of cables is controlled, avoiding their entangling or trapping.
- the fact that the conductive track has a connecting stretch which is directly fixed involves that the conductive track is perfectly located along this connecting stretch, not being free to move. Further, this method may be easily automated by an automatic layout machine.
- the connecting stretch corresponds to more than half of the conductive track.
- the risk of entangling and trapping is even lower, since there is a greater portion of the conductive track directly fixed to the housing.
- the connecting stretch corresponds to the conductive track.
- the risk of entangling and trapping is substantially zero, since the whole conductive track is directly fixed to the housing.
- the step of directly fixing the connecting stretch to the housing inner wall is made by means of gluing, clamping, embedding or snap fitting.
- the conductive track is a bare wire.
- Bare wires suit perfectly with methods according to the invention.
- One of the advantages is that they may be deposited faster, since several machines work with bare wires. Further, electric insulation is guaranteed by a plastic housing.
- the housing comprises a positioner and the connecting stretch is snap fitted to the positioner.
- the positioner comprises a channel, and after applying a pressure or at least one hit on the conductive track, the connecting stretch is at least partially encircled by the channel.
- a particular way of achieving this fitting is by means of a channel which is closed over the conductive track once the second has been deposited on the first.
- the fact that the conductive track becomes partially encircled after the hit protects the track and provides a reliable way of attaching them to the housing.
- the step of depositing a conductive track on the housing inner wall is preceded by depositing the conductive track on an auxiliary surface, and then applying the auxiliary surface with the deposited conductive track against the housing inner wall, so that the conductive track is deposited on the housing inner wall.
- the invention provides a lighting device manufactured by a method according to the previous inventive aspect.
- Such a lighting device has many advantages over the known lighting devices. Conductive tracks are perfectly organized inside the housing, avoiding the risk of entangling or trapping. Any failure would be more easily found, since all conductive tracks are easily seen and may be tested. Further, manufacturing may be automated, so these devices would be cheaper and may be obtained faster than the known ones.
- Figures 1a to 1d show different steps of a method of manufacturing a lighting device according to the invention.
- Figure 1a shows a housing 2 with a housing inner wall 21 and a main connector 3.
- Figure 1b shows some conductive tracks 4 being deposited on the adhesive track 11, so that they remain glued.
- the conductive track 4 has a connecting stretch 42 which is in contact with the housing inner wall 21.
- the connecting stretch 42 corresponds to more than half of the conductive track length.
- deposition of these conductive tracks 4 may be done in many different ways, from using an automated layout machine to manual deposition by an operator or by means of a predesigned pattern.
- the conductive tracks 4 are deposited in electrical connection with the main connector 3 and with a secondary connector 5 which is suitable for providing power supply and/or information to a lighting module.
- Figure 1c shows a detail of the secondary connectors 5 which may transmit electric power from the main connector 3 of the housing 2 to the lighting modules which will be part of the lighting device.
- These secondary connectors 5 comprise a controlled spare extension 41 of conductive track 4, so that lighting modules may be connected thereto and then mechanically inserted into the housing 2.
- Figure 1d shows a last step of this particular embodiment of method according to the invention, wherein some lighting modules 6 are inserted and electrically coupled to the secondary connectors 5. In this way, they are in electrical connection with the main connector 3 and directly fixed to the housing 2.
- Figures 2a to 2d show different steps of an alternative method of manufacturing a lighting device according to the invention.
- Figure 2a shows a housing 2 with a housing inner wall 21 and a main connector 3.
- channels 7 are distributed along the housing inner wall 21, ready for receiving the conductive tracks.
- Figure 2b shows some conductive tracks 4, which are intended to be arranged later in the housing, being deposited on an auxiliary surface 8.
- the use of this auxiliary surface 8 is specially indicated when the housing has an inner surface which is difficult to access.
- An automated layout machine 12 may deposit the conductive tracks 4 more easily in the auxiliary surface 8 than in such a housing.
- Figure 2c shows the step when the auxiliary surface 8 is applied against the housing inner wall 21, so that the conductive tracks 4 which have been deposited on said auxiliary surface 8 are placed on the housing inner wall 21.
- channels 7 are closed, so that the conductive tracks remain arranged on the housing inner wall 21 after moving the auxiliary surface 8 away.
- channels 7 are closed by applying a pressure or at least one hit on the conductive track 4, so that the connecting stretch 42 of the conductive track 4 becomes at least partially encircled by the channel 7.
- channels are closed by bending some portion of the channel, or connecting stretches 42 are just snap fitted in these channels 7, without the need of a further closure.
- Figure 2d shows the housing 2 with the conductive tracks 4 after the auxiliary surface has been removed. Lighting modules 6 are then added to the lighting device 1 and connected to the auxiliary connectors 5 which are provided for establishing electric connection between the main connector 3 and the lighting modules 6.
- Figure 3 shows a lighting device 1 manufactured following a method according to the invention which has been installed on an automotive vehicle 10.
