Description
SPECIFICATION
A display panel
This invention relates to a display panel.
It is known to provide display panels for instrument housings in which the panels are of translucent material and are provided with illuminating devices connected in an electrical circuit whereby instruments may be illuminated on operation of the devices. Generally, an electric circuit for the illuminating devices is provided on or in the panel and the illuminating devices are secured to components of the electric circuit.
A disadvantage of existing display panels is that, if any one of the illuminating devices becomes defective, it is difficult to remove the defective device from the panel and replace it with a non-defective device.
According to the present invention, there is provided a display panel comprising: a substrate having a recess therein,
a component having an illuminating device, and
electrical connecting means on the substrate and the component for connecting the illuminating device to an electric power source, so that when the component is located on the substrate with the illuminating device contained within the recess, the recess is illuminated by the device when electric power is supplied from the power source to the device by the connecting means.
The connecting means may comprise complementary members adapted to removably engage one another so that the component may be removably located on the substrate. The complementary members may comprise a plug and a socket adapted to receive the plug therein.
The substrate may be of material transmissive of light and may be plastics material.
Also according to the present invention, there is provided a component as hereinbefore defined.
The component may be elongate and may be provided with a plurality of said plugs located at one end portion thereof. Alternatively, the plugs may be located at opposite end portions of the component.
Following is a description, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of one example of a display panel in accordance with the present invention, the display panel having removed therefrom a plug-in bulb component also in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line I-I of
Figure 1 and showing the component in side elevation,
Figure 3 is a side view of the component in the direction of the arrow 'A' of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a plan view of another example of a panel in accordance with the present invention, the panel having had removed therefrom a plug-in bulb component,
Figure 5 is a cross-section on the line Il-Il of
Figure 4 and showing another example of a plugin bulb component for use with the panel shown in
Figures 4 and 5, and
Figure 6 is a view of the component shown in
Figure 5 in the direction of the arrow 'B.'
Referring now to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is shown a portion of an instrument display panel 10 of translucent acrylic material having a rear surface 11 and a front surface 12.The rear surface 11 is provided with channels 13 and a shallow recess 14 which, in plan view, is of generally oval configuration having, in opposite longitudinal side portions thereof outwardly extending semi-circular extensions 1 5. The shallow recess 14 communicates with a downwardly extending deep recess 1 6 which, in plan view, is of oval configuration but of smaller area than the oval configuration of the shallow recess 14, thereby providing a circumferential shoulder 1 7. The circumferential shoulder 1 7 is provided at one end portion thereof with a pair of recesses, one of which is shown at 1 8, and each of which is circular in plan view.
The channels 1 3 having received therein elongate strips of electrically conductive material 19, an end of each of the strips 19 extending into the shallow recess 14. Each of the shoulder recesses 1 8 has inserted therein a brass ferrule 20, each ferrule 20 being electrically connected to an adjacent end portion of an associated conductive strip 1 9. The conductive strips 1 9 are included in an electrical circuit.
The recesses 14, 1 6 and 1 8 are adapted to receive a plug-in bulb component 21 comprising a
plate 22 of synthetic plastics material and having an oval construction in plan view. The plate 22 has an upper surface 23 and a lower surface 24. The lower surface 24 has secured thereto two parallel elongate strips 25, 26 of electrically conductive material, the longitudinal axis of the strips extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the plate 22 and the strips 25, 26 being spaced transversely from one another. Each of the strips 25,26 has depending therefrom a brass stud 27, 28, each of the studs 27, 28 being located at one end portion of the plate 22. The strips 25, 26 have secured thereto, so as to be electrically insulated therefrom, a bulb 29 having a pair of electrically conductive wires 30, 31 extending therefrom.
Each of the wires 30, 31 is electrically connected to a corresponding one of the strips 25,26.
The component 21 is located on the panel 10 by lowering the component, with the bulb 29 lowermost, towards the rear surface 11 of the display panel 10 so that the bulb 29 enters through the shallow recess 14 and the deep recess 1 6 and each of the studs 27, 28 is received in a corresponding one of the ferrules 20. The component 21 is then pushed towards the rear surface 11 of the display panel until the strips 25, 26 on the lower surface 24 of the plate 22 engage the circumferential shoulder 17. In this manner, the bulb 29 is electrically connected in the circuit by engagement of the studs 27, 28 and corresponding ferrules 20. In consequence, when the circuit is operated, the bulb 29 is illuminated and light emanating therefrom is transmitted through the panel 10 thereby illuminating components, such as instruments, located adjacent the panel.
Preferably, the combined thickness of the plate 22 and each of the strips 25, 26 corresponds with the height of the shallow recess 14. In this manner, when the component 21 is located in the panel 10 the upper surface 23 of the plate 22 is in the same plane and the rear surface 11 of the panel 10. Also the channels 13 containing the strips 19 preferably are filled to provide a smooth contiguous rear surface 11 of the panel 10.
If the bulb 29 becomes defective, the component 21 can be removed from the panel 10 by inserting a tool, such as a tip of a screw-driver, into the extensions 1 5 of the shallow recess 14 and under an adjacent side edge portion of the component 21 thereby to move the plate 22 of the component 21 away from the rear surface 11 of the panel 10 and the studs 27, 28 axially of the ferrules 20 until the studs 27, 28 are removed from the ferrules. The component 21 having the defective bulb 29 then can be replaced by another component 21 having a bulb 29 which is not defective.
Referring now to Figures 4 to 6 of the drawings, there is shown a display panel 32 similar to the display panel 10 except that the display panel 32 is provided with channels 33 which extend outwardly from opposite end portions of a shallow recess 34 instead of from one end of the recess as with the display panel 10. Furthermore, the panel 32 is provided with recesses 35, 36 at opposite end portions of the shallow recess 34 in each of which recesses 35, 36 there is provided a ferrule 37, each of the ferrules 37 being connected to a corresponding one of electrically conductive strips extending in the channels 33.
The display panel 32 is adapted to receive a plug-in bulb component 39 similar to the component 21 except that the component 39 is provided with a pair of spaced strips 40 each having depending therefrom a stud 41, the studs 41 being located at opposite ends of the component 39 and thereby being adapted to be received in the ferrule 37 when the component 39 is located in the display panel 32. tz It will be appreciated that, in the display panel according to the present invention, there is provided a component having an illuminating device connected in an electrical circuit carried on the panel which component may be easily removed and replaced if the illuminating device becomes defective.
It will also be appreciated that the display panel may be provided with a plurality of components and may be provided with apertures and/or additional recesses for displaying information located on, or adjacent, the panel.
