In der Regel sind derartige Trägerelemente U-förmig ausgeführt, wobei der hierbei gebildete Längskanal der Aufnahme der Lichtquellen sowie der zum Betreiben der Lichtquellen erforderlichen Betriebsgeräte dient. Die Unterseite des Kanals ist dann durch eine Abdeckung verschlossen, welche die Lichtabstrahlfläche des Lichtbandes bildet und entsprechende optische Eigenschaften aufweist, um die Lichtabgabe in der gewünschten Weise zu realisieren. Üblicherweise handelt es sich um Elemente aus Kunststoff, die im Spritzgussverfahren oder im Extrusionsverfahren hergestellt werden und allenfalls eine sehr geringe Flexibilität aufweisen. Sie werden deshalb üblicherweise in bestimmten Standardlängen produziert, wobei sich allerdings ein entsprechendes Lichtband über eine deutlich größere Länge hinweg erstrecken kann. In diesem Fall müssen dann mehrere derartige Abdeckungen aneinander gereiht werden, was zur Folge hat, dass an den Übergangsbereichen zwischen zwei benachbarten Abdeckungen Stoßstellen im Lichtaustrittsbereich entstehen, welche sich negativ auf die Lichtabgabe auswirken können. Zwar wird versucht, dem entgegenzuwirken, indem die Stirnseiten der Abdeckungen derart ausgebildet sind, dass sie leicht überlappend ineinander greifen, trotz allem werden in diesem Übergangsbereich austretende Lichtstrahlen zwangsläufig etwas anders beeinflusst, so dass derartige Stoßstellen nach wie vor zumindest leicht erkennbar sind.
