Definitions

  • This invention relates to an incorrect operation safety lock device for sliding doors or windows.
  • This device or element is applied to the movable frame or sash of the door or window and acts on the control and operating unit, that is to say, on the movement of the closing systems driven by the handle, to prevent the systems from passing from an open to a closed configuration when the sash is open.
  • one prior art structure of the control and operating units on sliding doors or windows comprises:
  • the incorrect operation safety lock is located on the movable sash and acts along a direction transversal to the direction of vertical movement of one of the operating rods which slide on the upright of the sash itself.
  • the carriage is provided, on one side, with a bolt for locking the operating rod, and on the other side, with a spring which is interposed between the carriage and one wall of the box-shaped body in order to keep the bolt in a position of impingement on the operating rod.
  • the carriage also has, associated with it, a contact member, in this case parallel to the locking pin, adapted to oppose the spring the moment it comes into contact with the front surface of the upright of the fixed frame in such a way as to cause the bolt to withdraw relative to the rod, thereby allowing the rod to move.
  • a contact member in this case parallel to the locking pin, adapted to oppose the spring the moment it comes into contact with the front surface of the upright of the fixed frame in such a way as to cause the bolt to withdraw relative to the rod, thereby allowing the rod to move.
  • the operating unit is locked in place when the user, after opening the sash with the handle, moves the sash itself away from the fixed frame. In effect, this movement causes the contact member, and hence the carriage (pushed by the spring) to advance so that the bolt is engaged in a cavity in the drive rod and the latter is locked in the open position.
  • This type of device is now widely used in sliding doors or windows of traditional type.
  • Prior art devices cannot be used on sliding doors or windows of the lift and slide type precisely because of the type of vertical movement performed by the movable sash when opened and closed.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock devices known up to now must be "planned ahead", in the sense that they must be fitted when the sliding door or window is first installed. That is because, depending on the type of device used, it is, for example, necessary to use a special handle, or to adapt not only the upright of the movable sash to allow the device to be housed and passed towards the outside, but also the operating rod so that the pin on the device correctly engages the rod.
  • This invention has for an aim to provide an incorrect operation safety lock device for sliding doors or windows which overcomes the above mentioned drawbacks of the prior art.
  • the aim of this invention is to provide an incorrect operation safety lock device for sliding doors or windows which can be fitted quickly and easily both to traditional and lift and slide type sliding doors and windows.
  • a further aim of the invention is to provide an incorrect operation safety lock device for sliding doors or windows which can be adapted to the door or window even after the door or window has been installed and without modifying the frames and/or the movable control parts such as the operating rods or the handle.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device for a sliding door or window comprises: an intermediate block operatively connected to an operating rod at the point of connection between the rod and a control handle; a contact element slidably connected to the intermediate member and projecting outwards from the front of a vertical upright of the sash; the contact element has a contact head which, in use, abuts against a vertical upright of the fixed frame when the sash is in the closed position, so as to allow the contact element to withdraw towards the intermediate block; an elastic member interposed between the contact element and the intermediate block for keeping the contact element in a position where it protrudes from the intermediate block when the sash is in an open position; a plate for locking the rod, housed in the intermediate block, associated with the contact element and movable with the selfsame element from a first operating position for locking the rod, where the locking plate is received in a recess formed in a counter plate by which the handle is fastened to the sash, and a second operating position for sliding the rod, where the
  • any sliding door or window, before or after installation can be fitted with the incorrect operation safety lock device without modifying the structure of the frames and without substituting or modifying the type of handle used.
  • the intermediate block is a component which is built into the operating rod.
  • the device forms an integral part of the operating unit (rod) and does not affect the basic structure of the opening and closing system of the door or window.
  • the intermediate block is disposed along the rod and acts as a connecting element between the handle and the rod itself.
  • the intermediate block also acts as an external body for housing the components of the command for the activation and deactivation of the system of the incorrect operation (contact element, elastic member, locking plate) acting on the locking / unlocking for the movement of the handle and rod.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device of the invention can be used on a sliding door or window 1 composed of at least one sash 2 which is movable at least horizontally both ways (along a direction of movement T) relative to a fixed frame 3 between a closed position and an open position of the door or window 1.
  • a handle 4 is associated with the movable sash 2 through the agency of a counter plate 5 internal of the vertical upright 6 of the sash 2.
  • the handle 4 is operatively connected at least one point to at least one operating rod 7 on the upright 6 itself.
  • the rod 7, which is slidable in grooves in the upright 6, has closing means 8 (for example, bosses protruding from the rod 7) acting in conjunction with striker elements 9 located on the vertical upright 10 of the fixed frame 3 through sliding of the rod 7 along the upright 6 of the sash 2 when the handle 4 is operated to define the open and closed configurations of the door or window 1.
  • closing means 8 for example, bosses protruding from the rod 7
  • striker elements 9 located on the vertical upright 10 of the fixed frame 3 through sliding of the rod 7 along the upright 6 of the sash 2 when the handle 4 is operated to define the open and closed configurations of the door or window 1.

  • the incorrect operation safety lock device labelled 100 in its entirety, comprises an intermediate block 11 operatively connected to the operating rod 7 at the point of connection between the rod 7 and the handle 4.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device 10k0 comprises a contact element 12 slidably connected to the intermediate block 11 and projecting outwards from the front of the vertical upright 6 of the sash 2.
  • the contact element 12 has a contact head 13 which, in use, abuts against the vertical upright 10 of the fixed frame 3 when the sash 2 is in the closed position, so as to allow the contact element 12 to withdraw towards the intermediate block 11.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device 100 also comprises an elastic member 14 interposed between the contact element 12 and the intermediate block 11 for keeping the contact element 12 in a position where it protrudes from the intermediate block 11 when the sash 2 is in the open position.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device 100 comprises a plate 15 for locking the rod 7, housed in the intermediate block 11, associated with the contact element 12 and movable with the selfsame contact element 12 from a first operating position for locking the rod 7, where the locking plate 15 is received in a recess 16 formed in the counter plate 5 for fastening the handle 4, and a second operating position for sliding the rod 7, where the locking plate 15 is away from the recess 16 in the counter plate 5 and which corresponds to the sash 2 closed position.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device configured in this way is mounted to and acts on components which are external of the handle, and hence without modifying the structure of the handle itself.
  • the counter plate (the component used to fasten the handle) means that the operating rod 7 does not need to be modified in any way.
  • the intermediate block 11 is a component which is integrated with the operating rod 7.
  • the component used to support all the parts of the incorrect operation safety lock device may be a component which is built into the operating rod 7 prepared for the upright 6 of the sash 2.

  • the intermediate block comprises a second component 17, connected to the central part of the first component 11 and which mounts the contact element 12, the elastic member 14 and the locking plate 15.
  • the first component 11 of the intermediate block comprises a housing 18 for receiving a control fin 19 protruding from the handle 4 in such a way as to transmit the control movement of the handle 4 to the rod segments 7, 7a.
  • the intermediate block 11 is stably associated to the rod 7 (it slides with the rod 7 itself on command of the handle 4, via the fin 19) and it defines an housing body for the contact element 12, the elastic member 14 and the locking plate 15.
  • the handle (4) is extremely simplified in its structure.
  • housing 18 is formed in the central part of the first component 11 and is parallel to the zone where the locking plate 15 is housed.
  • the housing 18 is formed at a different height (see Figures 4 and 5 ) from the operating height of the locking plate 15.
  • the fin 19 is, in use, interposed between the locking plate 15 and the working height of the rod segments 7, 7a.
  • the second component 17 comprises a central through hole 20 engaged by the contact element 12 in such a way that the lower end of the contact element 12 can be associated with the locking plate 15.
  • the contact element 12 comprises a pin 21 with a rear end which is threaded for connection to the locking plate 15 and a front end which is configured to define the contact head 13 (see Figure 7 ).
  • the pin 21 is positioned with its axis 21 X perpendicular to the axis of rotation 4X of the handgrip 4a of the handle 4 so as to be positioned in front of the upright 10 of the fixed frame 3.
  • the locking plate 15 is disposed and moves (on command of the contact element 12) along a transverse plane (ie perpendicular) to the axis 21X of the pin 21.
  • the position of the plate 15 is correlated with the position of the counter plate 5 which, in use, lies in a plane parallel to the direction T of movement of the sash 2 and hence perpendicular to the plane of the locking plate 15.
  • the elastic member 14 (for example a spring) is coiled round the pin 21 and is retained, at one end, by a surface of the intermediate block 11 and, at the other end, by the contact head 13.
  • the contact element 12 comprises a contact head 13 with a contact surface which is configured to reduce friction during contact, including sliding contact, with the upright 10 of the fixed frame 3.
  • the contact element 12 comprises a contact head 13 which is semi-spherical in shape to reduce friction during contact, including sliding contact, with the upright 10 of the fixed frame 3.
  • the contact head 13 may be of interchangeable type.
  • the pin 21 has a flat head with which the semi-spherical contact head 13 may be coupled.
  • the semi-spherical contact head 13 allows the device 100 to be used both on sliding doors or windows of the traditional type and on sliding doors or windows of the lift and slide type, thanks to the possibility of sliding contact on the vertical upright 10 of the fixed frame 3.
  • the locking plate 15 comprises a flat central portion which, in use, is received in the intermediate block 11 and at least one tab 22 protruding transversely from the intermediate block 11 to engage the recess 16 formed in the counter plate 5.
  • the locking plate 15 comprises a flat central portion which, in use, is received in the intermediate block 11 and at least one pair of tabs 22 and 23 formed on opposite sides of the flat central portion and at least one of which protrudes transversely from the intermediate block 11 to engage the recess 16 formed in the counter plate 5.
  • the plate 15 is configured to define a cross-like shape, where the two long sides are used as anti-rotation elements thanks to contact with the lateral surfaces of the recess in the first component 11.
  • the flat central portion of the locking plate 15 comprises a hole 24 (threaded) for coupling with the pin 21 of the contact element 12 and located asymmetrically relative to the geometric midpoint of the central portion (see Figure 7 ).
  • one tab or the other 22 or 23 can be used as operating lock element in the recess 16 in the counter plate 5 by choosing the tab which protrudes to a greater a lesser extent from the first component 11 according to the depth of the profiled sections used on the door or window.
  • the counter plate 5 comprises two end portions 5a, 5b configured to allow the handle 4 to be fastened to the upright 6 of the sash 2.
  • the recess 16 for engaging the locking plate 15 is formed between the two end portions 5a, 5b.
  • the counter plate 5 is in the shape of a C where the two end portions 5a, 5b are wider than the middle portion 5c and are configured to allow the handle 4 to be fastened to the upright 6 of the sash 2.
  • the receiving recess 16 is formed in the middle portion 5c and is configured as an open half slot where the middle portion is narrower than the rest of the middle portion.
  • the half slot is made along one stretch of the middle portion 5c and its depth P is correlated with the thickness S of the locking plate 15 in such a way as to allow the plate 15 itself to be received snugly and securely.
  • the depth P is also correlated with the actual length of the forward and backward movement of the locking plate 15, that is, of the tab 22 or 23.
  • the incorrect operation safety lock device 100 structured in this way can be fitted directly during installation of the sliding door or window 1.
  • the following steps are performed:
  • the step of mounting the intermediate block 11 on the upright 6 comprises the step of housing of the fin 19 of the handle 4 in the intermediate body 11 itself.
  • Fitting the device 100 to a sliding door or window 1 which has already been installed comprises:
  • the device 100 works as follows.
  • the contact element 13 When the sash 2 is in the open configuration, the contact element 13 is held in the forward position by the spring 14 and keeps the locking plate (that is, the tab 22 or 23) in a position where it engages the recess 16 (also clear of the fin 19). That way, the handgrip 4a of the handle 4 is locked by the locking plate 15 (see Figure 4 ), which acts indirectly on the rods 7 and 7a and on the fin 19, and any attempts to turn the handgrip 4a are to no avail.
  • the contact head 13 When the uprights 6 and 10 of the sash 2 and of the fixed frame 3 are in contact with each other, the contact head 13 is in abutment against the profiled section of the upright 10 of the fixed frame 3 and causes the entire contact assembly 12 to withdraw by compressing the spring 14 and thereby moving the locking plate 15 away from the recess 16 in the counter plate 5 (see Figures 5 and 6 ).
  • the structure of the device is such that it can be applied to any type of sliding door or window without affecting the existing working parts, without necessitating additional machining work and thus reducing the overall cost of the door or window.
