Schienenfahrzeuge, insbesondere Passagierfahrzeuge werden heute meistens als selbsttragende Metallkonstruktionen hergestellt. Dabei wird ein Wagenkasten aus einem Untergestell, Seitenwänden, Stirnwänden und einem Dach aufgebaut. Das Untergestell muss den Betriebskräften, den Beladungs- Axialdruck- und Zugkräften sowie den Anhebelasten standhalten. Dieser Wagenkasten stützt sich auf Drehgestellen (oder Einzelachsen) ab. Die Verbindungsstelle Wagenkasten - Fahrwerk (Drehgestell oder Einzelachse) muss darüberhinaus auch noch die Antriebs- Brems- und Spurführungskräfte übertragen. Dazu werden Wagenkastenseitig sogenannte Hauptquerträger vorgesehen, welche eine sehr stabile Befestigungsstelle für ein Fahrwerk bieten. Dabei ist es üblich, die Hauptquerträger als besonders verstärkte Querträger des Untergestells auszuführen, wobei auch häufig eine verstärkte Anbindung dieser Hauptquerträger mit den verstärkten Fahrzeugenden ausgeführt ist. Solcherart kann eine gute Krafteinleitung des Kupplungsdrucks erzielt werden. Die Hauptquerträger können einerseits einen integralen Bestandteil des Untergestells darstellen und gemeinsam mit diesem (als Schweißkonstruktion) gefertigt werden oder als getrennt gefertigter Bauteil mittels Schraubverbindung an den Wagenkasten angebunden werden. Letztere Bauform bietet den Vorteil, dass ein solcher Hauptquerträger im Fertigungsablauf des Schienenfahrzeugs später eingebaut werden kann, was die Fertigungslogistik vereinfacht. Dem steht jedoch gegenüber, dass ein geschraubter Hauptquerträger konstruktiv deutlich komplizierter ist. Ein weiterer Vorteil eines geschraubten Hauptquerträgers ist es, das die Hohlräume eines solchen Hauptquerträgers als Druckbehälter (beispielsweise für die Druckluft der Sekundär-Luftfedern) genutzt werden können.
